Some big, dark family secret. Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Horton, eldest daughter of William Solomon "Bill" Horton and Ethel Lorraine (Collins) Morris, had two younger siblings: Bill, Jr. and Barbara Sue. Sue's in Calif now. Don't know where he is. Betty died not too long ago. She was my cousin by three ways, that we know of, and she and I together took care of Aunt Dana in her final years. Dana was Betty's ex-mother-in-law. Betty's mom Ethel was adopted at age 5 by Winfield Scott "Scotty" Morris and Iva Elizabeth Williams (of the Williams Mtn family). Scotty was a coal miner all over the SW WV counties. Just after Ethel's 3d child was born (c.1940-42), Ethel lost her mind, went so out of it. She was like a child, had to be tended to by her mother more than the 3 kids she had. Betty remembers her grandmother bathing the two of them (Betty and her mom), dressing them and combing and braiding their hair as if they were sisters instead of mother and daughter. She never said much and when she did, it didn't make sense. One thing she always said before and after this crash was, "You know I'm a Collins. Why did you change my name?" She began to run off, to go find her family. They had to get a posse of men and dogs and comb the mountains for her all the time, she'd wander off and get lost during the winter time especially. The sheriff finally told her parents they had to put her up, so she went to Huntington and spent the rest of her days there, died there. Once a month or so, the grandparents took a train up to Huntingtonto visit Ethel. Betty remembers going once but didn't like the smell and wouldn't go back. We found Ethel's birth certificate at the courthouse and sure enough it says Collins. A line has been drawn through the original b/c and Morris hand-written in on top of Collins. Her grandparents also raised but never adopted another child, Amos Baisden. In Scotty's old age, he lived w/ Amos, his wife Mary & their 6 boys, and that is where he died, with them, in 1957 in Logan Co. It was and is a real mind-bender. I found Ethel & Bill's marriage cert at the courthouse at Williamston. Never could find a death cert for her, for Betty. She wanted it for her kids. Scotty Morris is supposed to have been one of the finest men ever to walk the face of the earth, kind and loving and good, a hard worker and loved kids. We always wondered if it was from childbirth or ??? Bill the husband, went to the service, was wounded, recouped and joined another branch of the service, then took to driving long-distance haulers. Anything to get him out of the house and away. After Ethel was committed, he divorced her and we lose him. Sue At 04:32 PM 6/19/06 -0400, you wrote: >Thank you, Sue.
