I agree with the carelessness of those who were reporting their ages. Also noticed that some women were Married but there was no husband in the home, then later, Divorced, then Widowed, etc. Of course, it is possible they thought they were now a widow and not divorced if their ex-husband had died since the divorce! Also, I just think our mountain ancestors of 100 years ago didn't keep as close track of their ages, since nobody really cared. When you are living day-to-day, just trying to survive, who cares about your age? I HAVE seen children without names, just surname and a BLANK. Then, ten years later you can see they finally have a name. One is a great-great-great uncle named Van Buren EPLIN(g). His mother, Mary, was never married, not at 17, when he was born, or ever thereafter and there is no father even listed on his death certificate many years later. She died a single woman. I also found one gggg grandmother GUNNOE, Eliza HICKS, a blind pauper widow, and living with people of a different last name, maybe an early form of Assisted Living. I think there was some connotation of help from the county when one was listed as a Pauper in the Census. I have seen that many times in the Boone County Census. Sharon
