I know your feelings, Jim; My hometown of Blair has had many people with one leg,one arm, wheelchair people from broken backs, the coal mine life of ex miners. The fact a miner could get Black Lung disease was kept hidden by the industry for many years. And the profits from mining went to the out of state corporate heads. I emember as a child we only had funds for 7 or 8 months for schools. The coal industry was simply undertaxed in WV Many of the men employed by the mines were ex timbermen. they chose mining because they could work year round. In the winter months logging ceased.I know this is a genalogical site, but sometimes we have to spout off !! Old cuz; Shelby
Go get um Shelby, Black lung contributed to the death of my father also. It is truly a crime the way that miners have been treated and all the money that never went to the state as it should. I have a dear friend in Fla that I went to Man High with. She just a few weeks ago reeled off the names of our classmates that left the area after graduation but still came down with cancer, including her. The numbers are alarming for such a small group and it is still happening.....( and I dearly love my mountain state believe me, Landville will always be dear to me) ----- Original Message ----- From: <BurgessWV@aol.com> To: <WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 22, 2006 8:53 AM Subject: Re: [WVLOGAN] Jim Burgess typing Toler Deaths in Wyoming and Logan County, We... >I know your feelings, Jim; > My hometown of Blair has had many people with one leg,one arm, wheelchair > people from broken backs, the coal mine life of ex miners.
