Dear Logan County, West Virginia family and genealogist, I was going to give you a report on this in a couple of days when I finish. But I have to vent my feelings NOW! No one loves Logan County, West Virginia more than Jim Burgess It is a part of my fibre and life. All of my fathers ancestors lived there and settled there when Logan County was Cabell County West Virginia. I spent six years of my life there! I have typed all of the Toler Death Records in Wyoming County 31 Toler Deaths There are 57 Tolers in Logan County Death record (have typed about 35 of these!) 22 to go! 88 Toler Deaths at least 10 died in mining accidents That is over 10% of them dieing the mines. That is absolutely rediculous! (Actually I think it is about 15%) God bless our families who suffered as a result of the deaths of husbands, fathers and sons. At least 10 (of the first 66 typed)were killed in the mines - The Death records use some of these words: Broken Neck Skull Crushed Body Dismantled Body Dismembered Killed by mine locomotive Run over by train dismembered Fractured Cerebral Slate Fall in the mines Slate Fall Legs Severed How many others died such deaths? I am so upset I am going to bed - Will finish this tommorrow. This is just one family of 88 Toler names. How many more gave their lives? God bless Hiram Grant Burgess who took his family to Cabell County, West Virginia in 1918. I know that Hiram loved Cabell County but I now know why he left our beloved Logan County, West Virginia. My close family survived! My heart goes out to our relatives who gave their lives so that others could get rich from the mines. It is good that I did not know this when I lived in Logan County during the early 1970's. Why have our Logan County families put up with such garbage? I am really mad! Bless your heart, Jim. I have never been able to come back to WV but my roots are there. I get so angry when I read what the coal companies have done and are still doing. Even angrier that they are still getting away with what should be considered criminal actions.
