Hi Judi; You are lucky to have the envelope from the great yodeler,Jimmy Rogers.He was my alltime favorite, but I never had much info on him. Ethel, Wv, was a thriving coal town, located about six miles from Logan, on Dingess Run creek.Most of the early mines in Logan county, WV, got their start from days of WW1, when coal was in high demand; But Ethel goes back further to 1900.So it was one of the oldest mining towns in southern WV. The mine was active for over 50 years,so it may be one of the most productive of them all. Many of our fathers, grandfathers, worked the timber jobs in the nice weather months, as this was their first love. But Winter conditions forced them inside of coal mines, where they could work year round, regardless of weather conditions. I know my dad,and all his brothers, preferred the outdoors, over mining jobs. As soon as Mayapple came up, they would be in some logging jobs ! back then, the pay was about the same.
