Stanley is correct about the coal miners caring for each other. When tragedy struck, we miners would not work till the funeral was over. When payday came we would all contribute money to the deceased man's family. We had a burial expense by-law in our Local union treasury, that would pay all the final expenses for the deceased. in addition, the union would contribute a thousand dollar gift to the deceased man's widow.Probably a lot greater nowadays.
