Hello - There has been a discussion on the Mullins list re: Nathaniel Mullins - ours and others. The basic premise used to state that our Logan Co. ancestor Nathaniel was the son of a Nathaniel Mullins is based on the signature on the marriage bond being Nathaniel Mullins. The elder Nathaniel Mullins, supposed father of our Nathaniel, was illiterate and could not sign his name. Who signed the marriage bond in 1807 in Rowan Co., NC? Would it have been our Nathaniel himself, age 21?? Rick Below is info on the elder Nathaniel Mullins' illiteracy: Back in North Carolina in Franklin County (formerly Bute) John MULLINS wrote his will. This was April 9, 1784. He signed his will and it was witnessed by two people: John Cooley (who could write) and Nathan Mullins who could not and signed with an "X". It is my belief, and others, that John had 5 brothers: Thomas, Jeremiah, Clement, Nathaniel & Malone. In that same year of 1784, I believe Thomas, Clement and Nathaniel (along with others) arrived in Georgia. Jeremiah is not mentioned in Georgia until 1791-1794 time period. John is the only brother that remained in NC. Nathaniel does not appear in Georgia until he is taxed in 1802 in Hancock County. In 1811 he is witness to a deed transfer where he also signed with an "X". About 1818 he, along with his brother Clement, move to Mississippi. I have much more on this Nathaniel if anyone wants it, but I have no doubt that he could not write.
