Jim, This marriage record is confusing. The bride's parents should be listed as John PAINTER and Martha Toler. When Martha Toler (dau of David Toler and Mary Millard) married John Painter, she already had her two oldest daughters, Nancy Jane and Mary Etta. The two girls were very small at that time, so they were raised by John Painter. Even though Mary E.'s maiden name was listed as Toler when she married Charles Lewis Brown, other records listed a different maiden name. When some of her children were married in Logan County, Mary E.'s maiden name was listed as Cook, or as Painter. I'm guessing that Mary E. went by Painter as she was growing up, but there was some confusion concerning what her LEGAL maiden name was.
