Dear Logan County, Virginia Genealogists, As I study the Logan and Wyoming county records I find that I have not done an indepth study of these records. Too bad that I did not learn to do this correct the first, second, third, fourth, fifth time around. Not to smart I guess. In my Toler book I am typing each marriage completely as I find it in Pauline Haga and Donna Brown 's transcriptions. Hopefully the reader will be able to decide what is correct. The marriage records especially give us a great deal of insight into our families. For me the Wyoming County marriages for the most part (some exceptions) seem to fall right in line as they should. The Logan County marriage records yield a lot of ah ha's as I am in the process of reviewing them again. I have thought that I understood the Brown and Toler and Browning families. Not so! I want to believe that these records are correct, but some yield new revelations. Never in all these years have I understood the relevance and importance of the Belcher family to my families. Is there anyone on the list or does any one know some one who has studied the Belcher family in depth? Here are but two examples. Look at these Logan County marriages! Logan County, West Virginia Marriages 1872-1892 compiled by Donna Brown 22 Jan 1891 Logan County Farmer Byron Christian Minister Belcher, Lewis 39 Browning, Mary E 20 Logan, WV Logan WV 39 Logan Co WV Widow Logan Co WV Logan Co WV Single H Belcher R Toler H Browning Sarah J Smith Who are H Belcher and R Toler? A second marriage that is challenging is this record: Logan County, West Virginia Marriage Records 1872-1892 compiled by Donna Brown Sep 19, 1880 Logan County, Farming James M Cook Minister Bailey, T V Brown, Malinda Wyoming Co Va Wyoming Co WV 22 Logan Co Va Logan Co WV 18 L Bailey E Cook J H Brown N C Toler NOTE: We have the name as Margaret (Is this Margaret Malinda Brown?) J H Brown and N C Toler are my ancestors James Harley Brown and Nancy C Toler. Margaret is listed in the Census Malinda is not! Our families seem to have more than one name for the same person. Or are they two different people. We must carefully study the sketchy census records that we have and try to make a decision. I want to thank Stan Browning for writing the book on the Browning family. Laura Loding is working on the Barnabus Curry family. My plea to each of you is that you will consider writing a book on your Logan County family. At the very least save what you have collected and send a copy to the archives in Logan and the Libraries in and around Logan. Some national libraries would be happy to receive your work. thanks Jim Burgess
Jim... Here are the national libraries that would be very happy to receive information. DAR Library in DC (If you know a DAR member they can donate the item in your name, their chapter gets "points" for the donation. Newberry Library in Chicago (one of the best genealogical collections in the midwest by far. Library of Congress in DC The Family History center in Salt Lake City I plan to do all of the above plus, Logan Co, Mingo Co and WV Archives.
