Dear Logan County Genealogist and Family, We do not have to write books that are huge. We do need to write books or "booklets" that are accurate and true! I have written several books and do not think I have made much money on any thing. All of the money that I have received from Burgess, Mullins, Browning, Brown and Allied families has gone to fund my family history library. I have about 300 pretty good books in my library. It would be great if a new researcher could go to Logan or Wyoming or Boone County and see several books on families of Logan County. We have done the work. Why not share. We could find out if the libraries would be willing to purchase what we do. Some families are huge and some are quite small. With all the records we have from Ancestry and each other we can do a very nice job with our records. One of the concerns I have is that some seem to want to hold back on their research. We tend to send out small tidbits of information that really do not help others. We should tell people where the records came from. We have the following sources for Logan County (partial) All Census Records Birth records 1853-1860 Birth Records 1872 1900 (or what ever) Marriage Dates Death Dates WWI registration records Personal family knowledge History of Logan County Sigfus Olafson and Dave Turner's annotations On line death records Some Cemetery records & lots of other records Some people seem to be better at writing than others. Some do not have an interest. Some would do a good job proof reading and adding information. Seems like we could organize our selves and do this. I am very concerned about the lack of interest in the 1850 Census project in that we had few participants. I am not sure how many people we have on the list. Does any one know? How many people are willing to do a book? How many are willing to proof read a book? For Jim Burgess I commit to do the following: William Burgess and Susanna of Bedford County, Virginia Toler Families of Southwest Virginia - Descendants of David Toler and Susanna Other I am interested in or would be willing to contribute Descendants of Nathaniel Mullins and Margaret Peggy Wilson Descendants of Abner Vance and Susanna Howard James Brown and Esther Gough (which would include Brown descendants) The Abner Vance family is so huge that we could divide it into all of his sons and daughers. Several on the list would purchase them from others. I would be very willing to add information that I may have in my library. We need to pay attention and help others if we can. We could co author a book. I sincerely hope that several members on the list will volunteer to do something on atleast on of their families. If we know that some one is working on a family we could have those who subscribe to Ancestry send information to the person working on a particular family. We do not have to be alone in this. Any comments? thanks Jim Burgess -----Original Message----- From: gracie [mailto:g.winters@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Friday, April 07, 2006 11:41 PM To: WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WVLOGAN] Burgess file has 725 pages Toler Family is going to be bigger than the Burgess Family Jim, I agree with you completely on more books being written. Even if there are some mistakes, as long as it is noted that some information might need more research. I don't think a thing about sharing what I am sure about with most researchers. I figure that the more people who have the correct information, the better. At one time, I set up for family home pages to print out. I don't know if I did it wrong but when my printer program hit 10,000 pages, I shut it off. I still don't understand why the number went that high because I only had about 4,000 people in my files. Mayby it was going to include all the notes which have personal e-mails included. Anyway, right now all my research is in computer(no burner) and on GenCircles for safekeeping. I would love to put it in book form but really don't know how to do that yet. Guess I should take a class or something. I should mention something that I didn't know before. CDs only last about ten years at the most in prime conditions. So they need to be updated long before that. I also would love to find a copy of the Hager Family History book that was written in McPherson Co., Kansas. Have not found that one yet. Somewhere hidden in puter is the name of the person that compiled that book. Probably in my e-mail program. I am close to figuring out exactly when my gggrandfather, George Washington Hager, [s/o John Morgan and Elizabeth Jane (Miller) Hager] died. (BTW, John Morgan WAS a Major, that was not his first name.) I recently got the probate records for both George W. Hager and Eliza Ann (Baisden) Hager. Proof in those that his doctor was the father in law of his son William McDaniel. I was amazed at how long it took to finish the probate because of the traveling judge at the time. Over three years for both. Well, enough for now. For those of us who love genealogy, writing and sharing, but have never gone through the process of producing a book, I have to ask, how do you do it? What is the procedure? We have our databases, our scrapbooks and family photos. We have probably logged some family history stories told to us by our elders into the Notes section of the data base. That stuff that never makes it into data bases of the state vital records - like Joe had an affair with his next-door neighbor Tom's wife and two of her kids are by Joe. How do we handle sensitive issues other than omission or a course in diplomacy? I think my living relatives might disown me if I opened the door to the family closet. Yet, genealogically speaking - I would be lying if I put out certain segments of my database. Do you have a specific publisher you use? It's the old forest instead of the trees thing. The project seems intimidating, but only because I've never done it. I sometimes think it's a West Virginia thing, as no where else do I hear so often that no one would be interested in those old stories. I am and I love them. Those old stories are what makes my ancestors come alive. Without the stories, they are merely statistics in a book. Sue >============================== >View and search Historical Newspapers.
