Ancestry is selling the information. thanks Jim -----Original Message----- From: Joel Hager [mailto:joel.hager@us.army.mil] Sent: Sunday, May 28, 2006 7:41 AM To: WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [WVLOGAN] Rebecca Cook born Dec 28 1868 the daughter of Harrison Cook or Harrison Toler? Jim, I do not know how Larry Smith did his research. I do know that the site is useful when you look at the notes which show location of the family in the federal census and sometimes it has marriage information as well. He references Mary K. Bowman and Pauline Haga's books. I also noticed that he has started adding searches of Ancestry.com as a source for some data. It looks like a few of those references are from my research database from three or four years ago. I removed my files from Ancestry a few years ago when I learned they were planning to sell access to the data. I am not sure that ever happened but I removed the files anyway. Jim Ancestry does sell this stuff along with a lot of the other online companies. They have a way of getting this stuff weather you use one of their websites as a personal page or not. It happened to me when I never took out a personal webpage for my Meade's but yet I found all of my info right on a webpage with my name on it. When I sent emails and then called to complain they removed it but how much did they actually take for themselves before it was removed. I have like a lot of others use Family Tree Maker on my computer, I think they must be able to monitor what you have on your own personal Family Tree Maker program. All the Family Tree Maker additions that each and everyone of buy has a serial number. What a way to peek into your files.
