To Toler Researchers, While in Boyd County, Kentucky last week searching for Mead/e information I came across the following: I do not know if anyone has seen this material before but if you have please forgive for repeats. I thought it may be of some importance. Edy Mead married Christopher Toler in Bedford County Va on 15 January 1801 (John Ayers minister) pursuant to the following marriage bond and consent filed therewith in Bedford County Clerks Office viz: "Know all men by these presents: That we, Christopher Toler and Uriah Leftwich Jr. and hel & firmly bound unto James Monroe, Esquire, Governor of Chief Magistrate of the State Of Virginia in the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to which payment well & truly to be made to the said James Monroe, or to his successors, we bind ourselfves and each of us, our and each of our heirs Exors & Admins Jointly and Severally firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated 13 January 1801. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be had and Solemnized between the above bound Christopher Toler & Edy Mead, now if there shall be no lawful cause to obstruct the said marriage then the above obligation to be void else to remain in full force & virture. Signed and sealed in the presence of Christopher Toler Uriah Leftwich "Bedford County" I do hereby certify that I give my consent that you should issue license for the intermarriage of my daughter Edy Mead with Christopher Toler. Given under my hand & seal this ___day of January 1801 Signed Robert Mead Teste Rhodes Mead Uriah Leftwich Jr. Toler Notes: The first record of this family in Virginia, so far observed by the complier appears in Vol. 24 pages 389-390 of the Virginia Historical Magazine, quoting from the records of King William County as follows: 1704 Matthew Towler (Toler) to Vincent Inge land patented in 1702 for transportation of three persons. page 87-89 The persons to be transported were Thomas Elliott Mary Elliott and Quandam Bunting as shown upon the patent. Edward Nott Governor to Orlando Jones land formerly granted to Matthew Toler in 1702 and by him deserted. Patent page 131, 132. In 1782 Matthew Toler was assessed with 35 acres of land and William Toler with 143 acres in King William County Ba (6 William and Mary Quartley 2nd Ser. 328) Alterations on the land books of King William County for 1785 show a transfer to Mordecai Abraham by Joshua Toler. (7 William and Mary Quartley 2 Ser. 121) The inventory of Joshua Toler dated 12 May 1792 was filed in Bedford County Virginia by Robert Goad, George Hackworth Jr. and John Adams and recorded on 25 June 1792 in Will Book "B" page 82. The will of William Toler dated 8 April 1791 and recorded on 17 June 1799 Pittsylvania County deed book 11 page 211 mentions the following legatees: son Joseph son Joshua's widow and five children, Nancy, Molly, Barnabus, John and Cornelius, daughters Lucy Bowles, and Frances Dixon. Barnabus Toler married Sally Hackworth 15 December 1805 and Nancy Toler married Sanford Dove 29 January 1807. These marriages occured in Bedford County. The will of Joseph Toler dated 10 July 1818 probated the 15 November 1819 and recorded in Pittsylvania County deed book 11 page 521 mentions the following legatees: wife Frances, sons, Absolem, William, Elijah, and James, daughters, Sally Goad, Elizabeth Shockley, Mourning Robertson, Mary Bennett, Nancy Goad, and Jenny Thompson. John Shockley also mentioned in the will was probably the husband of Elizabeth. Joseph Toler is listed as a tithable in Cambden Parish Pittsylvania County, in 1767. (23 va Mag 79) and in a manuscript volume on file in the Virginia State Library referred to as Aud, Acct, 18, page 683 is the following entry: Richmond, Virginia 19 May 1784 Sundry Accounts Dr. to J. A. T. Cond Militia Warrant to Joseph Toler for his services in the militia of this State. British pound symbol 13s-4d. This record entitles the decendants of Joseph Toler to membership in the various societies of the Revolutionary. The marriage bond of Joshua Goad and Sally Toler dated 9 December 1799 with Stephen Toler as surety is filed in the clerk's office Bedford County Virginia. Sally Goad was a daughter of Joseph Toler as stated in his will above referred to and as sureties on marriage bonds were usually near relatives of one, at least of the contracting parties, it is assumed that Stephen Toler was a brother to Sally and therefore a son of Joseph, since the marriage bond of Stephen Toler and Peggy Pullen dated 16 April 1798 is filed in the clerk's office of Pittsylvania County. Identity of names as well as many other circumstances and facts indicate that there was a very considerable emigration from the southern part of Bedford County and the northern part of Pittsylvania County to the head waters of the Big Sandy River in Floyd County, Kentucky, about the year 1801. Floyd County was formed in 1799 and its courthouse with all of its records was burned in 1808. On page 3 of the first order book of Floyd County now available is the record of an unsuccessful motion by Christopher Toler for exoneration from the payment of his brother Stephen Toler's revenue and levy for 1806. If therefore Stephen was a son of Joseph Toler as above indicated, Christopher Toler was also. As further evidence to support this conclusion it may be stated that John Toler, son of Joshua, as stated in the will of William Toler above referred to, named his oldest son, Christopher Toler. Stephen Toler seems to have settled finally in that part of Greenup County, Kentucky that afterwards became Carter County Kentucky. Records of Greenup County show that on 2 Decmeber 1830 Stephen Toler of Greenup County purchased of John Young a parcel of 74 1/2 acres of land on Bull Branch of Tygarts Creek which he mortgaged to Adam Young on the 12 April 1831, as security for the payment of $84.00 and the records of Carter County show that on 20 June 1840, Stephen and Christopher Toler of Carter County purchased of George James two parcels of land containing 50 acres each situate on the Dry Branch of Little Sinking, a branch of the Little Sandy River. This Stephen and Christopher Toler must have been the sons of Stephen, son of Joseph for there is no evidence that Christopher, son of Joseph and brother of Stephen ever lived in Carter County. This conclusion is strengthened by a deed dated 15 February 1848 from Stephen Toler Sr. to William Everman for his interest in the two 50 acres parcels land which seems to indicate an inheritance from his son Stephen who may have died without issue. On 4 and 5 September 1848, two surveys were made for Chris Toler of 50 acres each on Little Sinking and Dry Branch (Jilson's Land Grants 1756) This shows that Christopher Toler was living after the 15 February 1848 the date of the deed from Stephen Toler Sr. Mr John McCall of Cattlettsburg Kentucky copied the following entries from the family bible of Caleb Toler whose relationship to Christopher Toler hs not been established although both seem to have sprung from the same stock. Caleb Toler b. 10 September 1796 Mary Ann Toler b. September 1828 Robert Toler b. 30 April 1830 Martha Toler b. 10 April 1833 Caleb Toler b. 14 February 1838 (?) James Henry Toler b. 6 November 1838 Caleb Toler married Nancy Crum sister to Preacher John C. Crum His first wife was .......Mary Ann Toler married a Dixon, Martha Toler married a Davis Robert Toler married a Fuller. Records of Boyd County Kentucky show that Mary Ann Toler's husband was Levi Dixon. Martha Toler's husband was Nathaniel Davis, Robert Toler's wife was Priscilla Fuller and Caleb Toler's wife was Constance A. An entry in the compliers old notebook of information received from his father is as follows: In August 1915, Dr. Lewis Prichard stated that his mother (Lucy Toler Prichard) and his wife's father ( Henry Armsmtead Mead) were first cousins. and this is verified by the marriage bond copied at the beginning of this sketch. Another entry in the complier's old notebook is as follows: Christopher Toler was father's grandfather and his wife's name was Mead. The source of this information does not appear but it seems to be verified by the marriage bond above referred to. William Ballard Faulkner, stated that his grandmother Lucy Toler Prichard came from Pike County Kentucky and that she had a brother named Bob. George Faulkner brother of William, in April 1910 wrote that our great grandfather Toler died from falling on a winding blade and that he was buried in the Newman Graveyard. On the same subject the widow of Richard J. Prichard on the 23 November 1918 wrote the complier as follows: Your grandmother Prichard told me that when her father died he lived on the farm that is now known as the Ed. Smith farm at the mouth of Blain that empties into the Big Sandy and the railroad station is called Catalpa. She said that they had a big peach pealing and the young folks were invited so as to have a lot of dried peaches. The pealings and seeds were left on the ground and near the pile was a winding blade stick. The blades were taken off but the sticks were still there. In the night he heard a noise and stepped out into the yard to see what it was. His foot slipped on a peach pealing and as he was a very large man with a very large stomach, he fell on the stick and ran it through him and died in a few hours. I have forgotten his given name but I know an old lady down in the country that I will write to. Perhaps she will remember something about it. I have a cousin in Huntington, WV. His uncle married one of your grandmother's sisters. I will also write to him and get their address and maybe her daughter will know something about it. There was another sister Carrie Coates. Your uncle Dick got a letter from her about 25 years ago wanting him to come to California where they lived at that time. They owned (she and her sons) the water works that supplied the county seat of Humbolt County, California. The first marraige record of Lawrence County Kentucky shows the marriage of Robert Toler and Julia Keechman on 7 September 1826 and the marriage of Polly Toler and George Hardwick on 8 October 1829. Robert and Polly were probably Children of Christopher Toler # 18. *I do not know at this time which Christopher Toler is # 18. I wrote this* An old register kept by Winston Dalton a school teacher in the northern part of Pittsylavania County during the early part of the last century which is now in the possession of Dr. Reuben W. Bennett of Gretna, Virginia conatins a great deal of history relating to the families of Pittsylvania County and Bedford County.
