Gracie, Barbara's husband was James Vance, ~Sr.~, b. ca 1795. I haven't found that James' middle name was Howard. It's logical that it might be because it was his mother's maiden name...but I've never seen it in writing anyplace except in other's data without documentation. James and Barbara named their 1st born Michael....probably after her father. I've seen no documented proof of that, either. Their first daughter was named Susanne after James' mother. James & Barbara's last-born child, a son named Thomas Jefferson Vance, was born 6 Oct 1841 in Jackson Co., OH. He was called "Col. John" in the 1850 Boone Co., VA census. He must have looked like his uncle or mimicked him. I descend from the James & Barbara's 5th child Marcena or Marsena, b. 1828 in (W)VA. She was later called Marcella but I don't know if that was really her name. a list of the Vance kids has turned up in the KS-MO-OK area with descendants of Thomas J. It has the children who were already married and out of the home by the 1850 census. Kansas is where James and Barbara died.... arriving there separately because they were divorced in 1858.
