Hi Jim, Joel has already answered your question, but I thought you might be interested in what we had to say about Shanton Raymond Workman in the book: TRACKING THE PIONEERS III. There is more on this family starting on page 177. Their's is quite an interesting story. STAN Shanton Raymond Workman, son of Joseph Workman (Jr.) and Elizabeth Reed was born about 1830 in Virginia.[1] He married Sarilda Webb, daughter of George Webb and Elizabeth Keller, 2 August 1845[2] in Tazewell County, Virginia.[i] Sarilda was born about 1820 in Tazewell County. She is confirmed to be a daughter of George Webb, Jr. by her being mentioned as such in her fathers will.[ii] Shanton and Sarilda brought their family to Wyoming County, probably just before 1850, when Joseph Workman (Jr) made the move. They lived in Wyoming County until after 1860. Sarilda first filed for divorce in Wyoming County in October 1860; however, they may have had children after that date. In 1870, they were living apart and Sarilda (“Ceril”)[3] and her children were in Braxton County. There is no indication that Shanton purchased property in Wyoming County; however, records show that on two occasions he and other family members were involved in selling what appears to have been a part of Joseph Workman (Jr)’s estate on Slab Fork of Big Fork of the Guyandotte.[iii] R. Workman et. al., sold mineral rights on 86 acres on Guyandotte River to William A. French in 1882. Some children of Shanton and Serilda moved to Washington state and others lived in Lewis County, and Clay County, West Virginia. Sarilda (Webb) Workman never remarried. She became a notable figure in Lewis County, West Virginia, where she and her children imigrated from Braxton County. According to family lore, she was a midwife and, to some old timers, a country doctor. Her death was recorded 1 February 1899 in a local paper, titled Weston World. The notice placed her death on Friday 17 January 1899 and her burial at the Skinner Cemetery at Orlando[4] in Lewis County. Shanton Workman married Dulcena “Ceny” Roberts, born about 1840 in Pike County, Kentucky, 28 July 1873 in Wyoming County.[5] He and Dulcina were documented in Greenbriar County in 1880. It could appear, based solely on the recorded dates, that Shanton and Sarilda’s children had been split up and six of the oldest children were living with their mother, Sarilda (Razilda), in Lewis County, West Virginia, while four of the younger ones were with Shanton and Ceny in Greenbriar County. With that line of reasoning, Dulcena and Shanton, by that time, had three children of their own. However, the more logical explanation is that Shanton and Dulcinia had children before he and Grizilda were divorced and he and Dulcenia were married. Presumeably, the older children had already left home. Dulcena, age 60, and her daughter Armeda, were living with her daughter, Rebecca, and son-in-law, Miles Workman, in Greenbriar County in 1900. Rebecca and Miles may have been first cousins.[6] The census records indicate that Shanton and Sarilda (Webb) Workman had twelve children. However, it can be seen that two of their children were born before their parents were married. Also, Shanton was much too young to be starting a family. The conclusion is that Sarilda had had a previous relationship and had at least two children before she and Shelton were married. Records show that Shanton and Dulcena had eleven children.[iv] [1] Birth dates for Shanton and Sarilda were derived from 1850 Wyoming County census records. Some marriage information from Sayre plus from an Internet post by Kristol Moore, 1 November 2001. Sayre gives Shantons birth date as 1818. [2] The actual marriage probably took place about 1840, but was not recorded ontil 1845. [3] It is sometimes better to search for information on this family by focusing on the children because the parents are not always recognized owing to the various ways their names are written and the fact that they each moved around a lot. Sarilda may also be written as Surilda, Ciril or Arzilla, and Shanton as Shendon, Shendel, Raymond, S.R. or R.S. [4] Orlando was known earlier as Confluence and was located near the Braxton-Lewis County line. [5] Dulcena previously was married to Michale T. Ford on 31 August 1863 in Wyoming County, West Virginia. [6] Rebecca, daughter of Sarilda Webb, may have been a daughter of Shanton Workman, but it is unlikely. Miles was a son of Shanton’s brother, William Washington Workman. [i] Pauline Haga. Tazewell County Marriages. (Crab Orchard, West Virginia: P. Haga 1993) [ii] Pauline Haga.
