When World War One happened, in the early part of the 20th century, one of the soldiers who fought in France would become supervisor at the Mud Fork Division of the Island Creek Coal Co. after his return from the army.He named the mines Argonne(#15), Shegon (14),and Verdun (16) for all the towns in France where he had fought.Verdunville was later renamed. Another mine, # 28,at the head of the creek was unnamed. Many of the homes still stand, after nearly a hundred years of age.They were all rehabbed,and updated. The company wouldnt allow for houses to be delapidated; they were kept in neat condition. Too bad the other mining companys didnt do likewise.Some like Ethel & Freeze Fork were the pits !
