Shelby, There is nothing modern about Thurmond. During the coal boom it was a hoping town but now I believe there are only 4 families who live there. There is no longer a post office. Only 4 of those locking mail boxes on a pole. But it is a wonderful place to walk around. On the river bank past the town are cabins where people stay in the summer. A friend of mine and her husband has chosen to remodel their cabin and live there year round. It is so peaceful there. Parts of Matewan was filmed at Glen Jean which is another very small town before you get to Thurmond. The parts that showed the old bank and a couple of other parts. I remember they brought loads of dirt in to cover the streets. The old Glen Jean Bank now houses some of the offices for the National Park Service. Anita
I wondered about the little cabins along the river I saw when I took the boat ride at Hawks Nest. He takes you both ways, under the new River bridge a ways and also the other direction. There are some little cabins that are abandend but some looked kept up just along the river bank. Does anyone know?
