Shelby, you are Norma were a pair, for sure. lol I have George's place of birth as Kanawha Co.(Boone Co.) which could be wrong I'll admit. (well, shoot, the 1860 census doesn't list what county my ggrandparents were born in.) And that census says John Morgan was born in Cabell Co. not Boone, or were they the same county at different times? Just can't keep up with all the name changes. His father, John Morgan, (and he was a Major), fought on the Union side. I have wondered if that may have been part of the reason my ggrandparents came out west to Ks. I have not checked to see what side Rev Philip or Andrew J. fought on. Looks to me like Aaron and Joseph F. were too young, mayby not though. My mother told me that her father, John M. Hager was born in Hagerstown, Wv(may have been 'Hager' township as we have not been able to find a Hagerstown/Hagertown.) Did find 'Hager', looks to be a wide spot in a one lane road. It does have a coffee shop? that has a phone. Gracie, All three of the Civil War pension records I've seen have had some sort of notation about the soldier's marriage, wife and children. I think they did this so they had the soldier's word if the widow later filed for a widow's pension. One of mine wrote his birth place and date in the margin and then stated his birth name.... he had married and enlisted under his stepfather's last name but was never adopted. I also saw one where the mother had to prove that her dead son was really hers...he died during the war. I don't remember now if she was applying for some sort of support or what since he supported her. They sent me that one by mistake. Right name, wrong guy. Carole
Where besides Ancestry, do I look for confederate pension records? Neither George nor Eliza show up. I even went through enough that I covered misspellings. The southern records are not suppose to be at NARA. Gracie, Give this one a try: http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm It has both Union and confederate Soldiers. Good luck! Carole > Where besides Ancestry, do I look for confederate pension records? > Neither George nor Eliza show up.
Gracie I have a few 1853-1860 marriage records from Virginia and I checked and did not see the names you were looking for. I also checked Pike County marriages 1822-1865 and it was not there either.
