    1. [WVLOGAN] assistance on my Brownings #1,
    2. Hello, I have lost my paper work and am having to search out letters I saved on my hard drive. I have many. Some my own, some from others as I will post. If you have time and can look and correct anything for me I sure will appreciate it. Once some of my family members heard that "Obama" if the on line work someone has of him and my own Browning go to Frances Browning they would like copies from me. I have lost my Browning Tree on paper work which is to cry over. I will follow this letter with my own letters and other researchers as well. If you can help me, I sure will thank you, but if not I know everyone is busy and understand. I will follow with leter #2 with what is to be "Obama" on line. I have never understood removed cousins. If anyone can help me with a Tree / or diagram to explain the connection, I and my cousins will be eternally gratefull. lol, might be a show and tell, who knows. 3. Judy, Let me see if I can explain "removed cousins" to you. In my family tree, my grandmother McClung was Jessie. Jessie had a sister, Mable who had several children. Mabel's children are my first cousins, once removed. Think of the "removed" as rungs on a ladder. The once removed is because they were my father's cousins, and my cousins once removed because they were on the rung above me and the same rung as my father. 3. The question would be if that particular slogan is copywrited. If it is, you would be violating copy write to use it without permission of the copy write holder. I have a friend who does t-shirts/hats etc. He as an excellent graphic artist who comes up with some really original stuff. He would have a field day with this phrase, and he looks like a hillbilly too! 3. Maria - I want to thank you for all you have done for the mountains and for your sacrifices. My 81 yr old mother & I just finished watching the video and we are so proud of you. Mom was born & raised in Boone County and the destruction of the mountains greatly saddens her. I want you to know that you have our support and blessings, and yes, we will do our part to conserve electricity. We already heat with geothermal, have peak controls installed and are getting another load control panel installed as soon as the panel comes in. Everyone can help by turning off unused lights, turn off the computer when done, think before you leave your home....what else can you turn off to save energy? We should all support wind energy. God Bless and protect you Maria!! Evelyn Wilburn Sukey

    3. Shelby, There is a big fight going on in Raleigh County regarding Mountain Top Removal and the lives it is disrupting and once again Massey is right smack dab in the middlle of it. Massey has its employees brainwashed into thinking that if not for Massey Energy, there would be no work in the coal fields anymore. Just yesterday, I read a letter in the paper talking how they are using intimidation and threats of violence against a 93 yr. old widow because she is complaining about the damage to her house and property from all of the blasting. I can remember back in the seventies the blasting that occurred at Holden #27 and the damage to peoples not just from the blasting, but also from the boulders that hit the homes. If you were lucky enough to have someone to inspect the damage, you were usually told that the damage must have already been done and was of course no fault of theirs. Back then, it was called strip mining. 3. The Battle of Blair Mountain- Past and Present In 1921 on Blair Mountain, 10,000 coal miners rose up against coal barons in defense of their right to unionize. The undeclared civil war that followed lasted ten days and became known as the Battle of Blair Mountain. This legendary event is now characterized as America's largest-ever labor struggle. The shooting war pitted union and anti-union forces against one another in the mountains of Logan, West Virginia, culminated in the arrival of federal troops at the governor's request and bears the distinction of being the only time the United States has bombed its own soil. [ I have to add this, what happened in the Okla Panhandle was a mistake. ] The battle did not result in the immediate unionization of the southern West Virginia coal fields, but through the confrontation, the United Mine Workers of America won a moral victory. It brought broad exposure to the everyday injustices endured by working men and women in the mines, and support for unions grew. Union efforts in the area were eventually vindicated with the passage of the National Industrial Recovery Act, which in 1933 legalized the right of coal miners to join a union without the fear of reprisals from mine owners or operators. Today, another battle is being fought on Blair Mountain. Despite widespread efforts to preserve this valuable place as a historic site, a mountaintop removal permit is pending on land where parts of the battle occurred. Mountaintop removal blasts the earth and rock of mountaintops apart and fills valleys with debris. This irresponsible mining practice has already destroyed too much of our Appalachian cultural and environmental heritage. Now it threatens to obliterate one of our most hallowed historic sites. Local citizens, historians, and environmental organizations believe that Blair Mountain is too integral a part of American history to be destroyed by this irresponsible practice. Last year, the State of West Virginia submitted a nomination to the Department of Interior for Blair Mountain's inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. The Interior Department subsequently returned the application, requesting additional information. Meanwhile, mining companies and landowners who stand to profit from mining on the site filed a lawsuit challenging the petition for historic status. The Sierra Club has entered a lawsuit to protect Blair Mountain as a historic place, in conjunction with the State of West Virginia, the Friends of the Mountains Coalition and the Keeper of the Mountains Foundation. The respected National Trust for Historic Preservation also believes that Blair Mountain is too valuable to be blasted apart. The organization named the site as one of America's 11 Most Endangered Places. "It is particularly important, given the recent mining tragedies in West Virginia, that we not lose this symbol of the bravery and determination of union miners to improve their working conditions," said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust. "It is incumbent upon the property owners and preservationists to work together to permanently protect and interpret this little known but highly significant historic place." Protecting Blair Mountain and developing an interpretive program for tourists would bring economic benefit to the local community, while allowing West Virginians to pass down this unique piece of American history.
