Anita, None of my family names are on any of the list I have seen. But like you, I have the knots on the back of my head. {Nancy is the one who found one I wasn't aware of having} I don't think I have any Melungeon ancestry. But find it very interesting to study. Most of my ancestors are English,German and the like. But my grandmother, on my Dad's side, is the one who causes me to wonder. I grew up thinking she was part Indian, but haven't found anything to support those ideas. She was Toler and Blankenship, I know how far away can you get? What surprised most of us at the Gathering, was looking at family pictures. And there would be those you could tell were Angelo-Saxon and right beside them was someone that looked Spanish or Indian. I can remember as a child someone being called Black Dutch. They would be the ones we now call Melungeons. Oh well. It is an interesting subject and if anyone has a chance to attend any of the Gatherings,I would advise you to attend. We met some of the nicest people at the one held in Logan this year. Hello Anita - And the reverse is true as well. Melungeon women married men with other surnames not to be found on the list. This ancestry seems to be much more prevalent in Appalachia. I am sorry to hear about your father's thalessemia major and your lupus. Familial Mediterranean Fever and sarcoidosis are two diseases that can be seen in Appalachia but rarely diagnosed. I've found the study of the Melungeons to be very interesting. Brent Kennedy's writings came about from his being diagnosed with the Mediterranean disease sarcoidosis (sp?). It was interesting that my ethnicity matched closely with Brent's writings in "The Melungeons: The Resurrection of a Proud People". My ancestry is Portugese/Spanish; Native American; India Brahmin; Moroccan Berber; the Mediterranean areas of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, and markers in Egypt and Israel. Plus I had Scottish; Danish; Belgian; Scandinavian; and French. I had no sub-Saharan African. I suspect that many southern West Virginians would have an ethnic profile similar to mine. The proper proposal should have been a designated National Park. The coal interests had previously agreed to to a small ten acre memorial site at Blair Mt gap. (AP) - Blair Mountain Battlefield is coming off the National Register of Historic Places. Jacqueline Proctor with the West Virginia Division of Culture and History said Monday that the 1,600-acre site likely will be removed from the list sometime next month. <http://cas.clickability.com/cac?a=221969&n=114364&d=98846&c=6500> State officials were informally notified of the change on Thursday. Official notification is in the mail. Following a public notice and 30-day comment period, the Logan County site of a bloody battle over union organizing in 1921 will be designated as eligible for listing. The site was placed on the register in March. Efforts to remove it began after the number of objections was corrected to 30 of the 57 affected property owners.
