Anita, I wonder what has caused your springs to change color? Have you had it tested? Out here in my area I call the Arkansas River 'Ole muddy'. lol, have never seen it clear. Just the way it is. Even before it was dammed, and was low enough to walk across, it was brown, and didn't we dare walk across it because of the quicksand. Keystone Lake near Tulsa has red/orange water but that is from the red clay. That's why I love the pics of WV streams and waterfalls. Would love, just once, to see clear running water. Guess I need to travel more. Hello Gracie - I hope and pray that MTR is stopped. The coal can be deep mined and would create many more jobs for miners. It's a sickening feeling to see my home state destroyed mountain by mountain and stream by stream. The coal barons have run roughshod over Appalachia for far too long. Rick; The Pastor at the Shaprles Baptist church named Sodom ; he got disgusted because of two beer taverns going into business close to his church, and started calling the area 'Sodom', after the evil place in the Old Testament. I didnt mention the mining community called Dobra, in my last post. It is located about a mile downstream from Sharples. An elder Polish miner named the town. D obra translated from the Polish language means 'good'. The name stuck ! Cuz Shelby
I forgot Dobra. So it is a Polish name. Marshall Mullins, my great grandfather, had a store in Sodom. He built the homeplace outside of Blair in 1905 for the family. I don't know where they lived in Sodom. The minister naming it is a good story. Hi Rick; I have no idea how Sharples got its name. Monclo was named for Montgomery Clothier, the president of the Boone Co. Coal Corp. ( MON CLO )the silables extracted from his full name. The pioneer name for Blair was 'Seng', Va, but later named for a coal co. attorney(Blair). Thanks for your input. Cousin Shelby
The stretch between Clothier and Blair is a small part of Logan County. Shelby said that Clothier was named after the founder of the Boone Co. Coal Corp. Blair was named after a Philadelphia banker. What about Sharples and Monclo? It bothers me that our towns were re-named after Northern bankers and coal barons. Shelby's daughter Gail wrote an excellent post to the list about the coal barons "colonizing" the coal counties. I suppose renaming the towns was part of their strategy to erase our individuality.
