    3. Gloria, I have always wondered how they came up with Polly for Mary and Peggy for Magaret. My great grandmother had a sister that we always called Aunt Cinda. Her name was Lucinda. But how did they come up with Hank for a man named Henry? Anita ________________________________ From: Gloria Damron <gdamron@roadrunner.com> To: Vernia Brooks (Yahoo) <vlbbrooks@yahoo.com>; wvlogan@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, September 8, 2009 4:42:03 PM Subject: [WVLOGAN] Clarissa, Or Claracy ? I have found mostly  in the southern census records that they wrote down the names as the people  as they called them.    In my husbands family there is a Sarah, but she was called Surry.  Also I have a copy of a marriage paper for my husbands ancestors for Armeldy Meade and Jesse Damron.  She is listed elsewhere as Armelda.  They most likely told them the name they called them other than the name they were given at birth.  Why do they call a girl Polly- when her name is Mary?  Or call her Sally if her name is Sarah.  How do they get Peggy out of Margaret?  My husbands great aunt was always called Aunt Lanie-  I thought it was short for Elaine, I never knew her name was Delaina until I found her on the census records.  I suggest you check all spellings of the name- both first and last. Some of the men's names are just as confusing! 3. Shelby, I had to laugh when I re-read your cure for a bee sting. A few nights ago, my son and my uncle got into a yellow jackets nest while weed eating at my grandmothers. I am not sure about Bob, but Chris got it about 5 or 6 times, one of which was on his eye. I can just picture us running around trying to find enough pennies to apply to the stings... We used the old standby - baking soda. Have a good day. He says to tape the penny over the sting for about an hour. Always have some pennys on hand during the Summer months ! 2. If ever a town needed a water system, it was Chapmanville. The wells would go dry during the summer months, or get real low. I can remember carrying buckets of water from the Guyandotte river, so my grandmother Baisden could do the week's laundry. Her well was one of the first to go dry. This was back during the 1930s, and 40s. The new water system was a welcome sight to us ! Shelby

    2. Sandi; Your laughter reminded me of a joke George Browning Of Blair pulled on his elderly mother-in- law back in the 30s. He was taking her to a Dr. at Madison, and she had never seen a gas well. It had a smell like human waste. As they passed the smelly gas well , he decided to have some fun out of her. He told her she had messed on herself. "upon my honor, George Browning, i've done no such thing !' He barely could hold back the laughter, as he told her he was going to find a patch of bushes where she could clean herself. The old smelly gas well was located at Greenview, Boone co. WV. Shelby

    3. Gas well drilling changes the smell and taste of well water.... For many years throughout the 1950's into the mid-1980's near Chapmanville, my parents had the best well water to drink.  It had absolutley no odor or taste other than pure good water from the ground, until the early 1990's when they began drilling gas wells in Chapmanville.  Suddenly, my parents well water began tasting like rotten eggs and smelling of sulfur and gasoline....Just aweful.  My mother finally had to hook up to city water. The DEP never would look into it.  But everybody's pooh from Man to Logan to Mitchell Hts to Chapmanville goes down the Guyandotte River and that is what is used for our CITY WATER........Go figure!   LOLLOLOLOL I really have to laugh about that one.  But I drink it too. 2. Anita ; Its a fact of life that coal seams & water tables go together. As a former miner, I can remember wading through water sometimes a foot deep. The reddish color in your little creek means Sulpher is present. Sulpher will hardly harm the human body, but is deadly to fish in streams, as it replaces the oxygen. It has an awful taste, needless to say ! Shelby

Anita, I wonder what has caused your springs to change color? Have you had it tested? Out here in my area I call the Arkansas River 'Ole muddy'. lol, have never seen it clear. Just the way it is. Even before it was dammed, and was low enough to walk across, it was brown, and didn't we dare walk across it because of the quicksand. Keystone Lake near Tulsa has red/orange water but that is from the red clay. That's why I love the pics of WV streams and waterfalls. Would love, just once, to see clear running water. Guess I need to travel more. Gracie, I can attest the ugly water. Back in the late seventies, early eighties my parents bought this farm where we all now reside (Fayette County) - they in one house and my son and I in another. Running along side of my house are two streams. One runs thru my yard and the other on the othes side of the road. Both of these are natural springs and the one on the other side of the road turned red seveal years ago and now I am seeing hints of red in the one that runs thru my yard. You know what is interesting? There has been no "strip mining, MTR" anywhere near our farm.
