    3. Bless your heart, Jim. I have never been able to come back to WV but my roots are there. I get so angry when I read what the coal companies have done and are still doing. Even angrier that they are still getting away with what should be considered criminal actions. 1. seeking Orval Plants (Boone WVA) and Battle Blair Mountain information
    2. Hi. My great uncle, Orval Plants, was born in Boone County WVA and died in 1955 in Everett Washington. According to family tradition, he was very involved in the Battle of Blair Mountain. He apparently learned there was a possible indictment against him, so fled the state and only came back once, quietly, for a family reunion some 20 years later. I am fascinated by this period of history for Boone, Logan and Mingo Counties. There are probably many of our elders who have first hand stories about it, perhaps shared by their parents- that hopefully someone is documenting. I am very interested in learning if there are any indictments etc. regarding this. The only thing I really found that mentions over 1000 indictments being filed is this that I found online. I have quoted the relevant parts. Does anyone have any idea if these indictments still exist in Logan County Courthouse? I'd love to schedule a trip if they are still available somewhere. If anyone has any knowledge of my great uncle I would sure appreciate it. I understand he may have worked for the Spruce River Coal Company at some time- and also worked at Jeffries. (they may be the same place.) thanks in advance- I'd love to hear what others know of this amazing time in our history. Debbie Deem Here's the info-- socialist and apparently from England-- so they must have gotten the sources from somewhere in WVA: _http://pubs.socialistreviewindex.org.uk/isj66/newsinger.htm_ (http://pubs.socialistreviewindex.org.uk/isj66/newsinger.htm) "How many men were killed in the march on Logan and the battle for Blair Mountain is not known. The official estimate was four, but both sides deliberately concealed their casualties and buried their dead in secret. The union's defeat was now followed by a legal offensive. Between September and October 1921 grand juries in Logan County brought in 1,217 indictments for complicity in the insurrection including 325 charges of murder and 24 indictments for treason. Hundreds of miners including Keeney, Mooney and Blizzard were thrown into jail. The trials were held in the courthouse where John Brown had been convicted in 1859. Blizzard was singled out as an example but after a trial lasting over a month he was acquitted in May 1922. The great majority of charges were later dismissed but two miners, a baptist minister, the Reverend J E Wilbur, and his son, were convicted of murder for shooting a special deputy."

    2. Jim Burgess
    3. Dear Logan County, West Virginia family and genealogist, I was going to give you a report on this in a couple of days when I finish. But I have to vent my feelings NOW! No one loves Logan County, West Virginia more than Jim Burgess It is a part of my fibre and life. All of my fathers ancestors lived there and settled there when Logan County was Cabell County West Virginia. I spent six years of my life there! I have typed all of the Toler Death Records in Wyoming County 31 Toler Deaths There are 57 Tolers in Logan County Death record (have typed about 35 of these!) 22 to go! 88 Toler Deaths at least 10 died in mining accidents That is over 10% of them dieing the mines. That is absolutely rediculous! (Actually I think it is about 15%) God bless our families who suffered as a result of the deaths of husbands, fathers and sons. At least 10 (of the first 66 typed)were killed in the mines - The Death records use some of these words: Broken Neck Skull Crushed Body Dismantled Body Dismembered Killed by mine locomotive Run over by train dismembered Fractured Cerebral Slate Fall in the mines Slate Fall Legs Severed How many others died such deaths? I am so upset I am going to bed - Will finish this tommorrow. This is just one family of 88 Toler names. How many more gave their lives? God bless Hiram Grant Burgess who took his family to Cabell County, West Virginia in 1918. I know that Hiram loved Cabell County but I now know why he left our beloved Logan County, West Virginia. My close family survived! My heart goes out to our relatives who gave their lives so that others could get rich from the mines. It is good that I did not know this when I lived in Logan County during the early 1970's. Why have our Logan County families put up with such garbage? I am really mad! I want to say a nasty word but cannot! Good Night - I am sorry! No I am not sorry! Jim Burgess

    1. RE: [WVLOGAN] Joshua Adkins
    2. Joel Hager
    3. Shelby, I am not sure anyone has positive proof of the parents of Joshua Adkins. I believe the person that has done the most research on this family besides JJ Adkins and Ronnie Adkins is Lisa Honaker-Odom. I have settled on Joseph and Sarah Adkins as the parents of Joshua Adkins primarily based on the research of Lisa Honaker-Odom. Joseph Adkins s/o William and Elizabeth (Parker) Atkinson. The name Atkinson appears in many early records and then Adkins and Atkins seems to have been a shortened version. Adelphia Adkins was the d/o David and Judith Adkins. David s/o Mary Adkins and as some would have it Jacob Harley. Mary Adkins d/o William and Elizabeth (Parker) Atkinson. I have found this information on Joseph Adkins: 1782 Montgomery County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List Adkins, William 1 Atkins, Bartlet 1 1 1 Atkins, Joseph 1 4 6 25 Atkins, Riven 1 3 10 Atkins, Sherid 1 5 Atkinson, Morris 1 1 1 Joseph Adkins 23 Sept 1791 Montgomery County 40 a. On the waters of Holstein and between the lands of Boys Cutton & his own lines Grants No. 45, p. 85 There is also another Joshua Adkins s/o Sherrod Adkins. He married Barbary Lucas January 4, 1816. I have also recently added another son to the family of Joshua and Adelphia Adkins. This is based on Harvey Adkins being located next to Joshua Adkins in the 1850 and 1860 Boone County census records and I have found very little on his family. If anyone has information on the family of Harvey Adkins let me know. 1. Harvey Adkins-[112851], son of Joshua Adkins-[28262] and Adelphia 'Delphia' Adkins-[28599], was born about 1825 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia and died after 1900 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. Harvey married Rachel Bennett-[112876] [MRIN: 75995], daughter of Robert Bennett-[95748] and Catherine Adkins-[95760], on 19 Mar 1849 in Fayette (Raleigh) County, (West) Virginia. Rachel was born about 1828 in Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia and died on 10 May 1856 in Boone County, (West) Virginia about age 28. Children from this marriage were: 2 M i. Robert Adkins-[112853] was born about 1851 in Boone County, (West) Virginia and died in Y. 3 F ii. Nancy C. Adkins-[112855] was born about 1854 in Raleigh County, (West) Virginia and died in Y. Harvey next married Hettie Jane-[112852] [MRIN: 75992] about 1856. Hettie was born about 1832 in Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia and died after 1900 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. Children from this marriage were: + 4 M i. General Britton Adkins-[112854] was born about 1858 in Raleigh County, (West) Virginia and died after 1920 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. 5 F ii. Levina Adkins-[112856] was born about 1861 in Boone County, (West) Virginia and died in Y. 6 M iii. Henry Adkins-[112857] was born about 1871 in (West) Virginia and died in Y. Second Generation (Children) 4. General Britton Adkins-[112854] (Harvey 1) was born about 1858 in Raleigh County, (West) Virginia and died after 1920 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. General married Unknown-[112858] [MRIN: 75993]. Children from this marriage were: 7 M i. Averal Adkins-[112860] was born about 1886 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. 8 M ii. John M. Adkins-[112861] was born about 1892 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. General next married Victoria-[229917] [MRIN: 75999]. Victoria was born about 1863 and died in Y. The child from this marriage was: 9 M i. William Adkins-[112862] was born about 1902 in Lincoln County, West Virginia. 3. Shelby... I know there is a lot of controversy about the Adkins, and it's variations. I do know that David Lee Adkins is listed as David Lee Atkinson in the DAR records. So it would not surprise me at all if the Atkins and Adkins are all one and the same family.
