Dear Logan County Genealogist, We may have more books than we think. When we are finished perhaps Donna Brown will post this list on our Logan County, West Virginia USGENWEB site. We should add books that are being written! If you are willing to do a look up in this book let us know! thanks Jim Burgess
Dear Logan and Wyoming County, West Virginia Genealogist, As most of you know I have been working on the Toler family of Wyoming County for the last few months. This is a much larger project than I had realized. All I can say is that it is wonderful to see this record come together. I love and appreciate everyone who is or has helped me. About a week ago I printed out my second Toler booklet 571 pages. Sunday evening I printed the 1920 Wyoming County Census for Clearfork and Huff Creek Districts. I have been comparing the names in that census with my index. I was astounded to see that I am related to well over half of these families through the Toler family. No one ever said I was very smart but then I thought that well I am related to other families through William Walker and Nancy Browning Priscilla Riggins married John Cook Clayborne Blankenship is also my ancestor Abner Vance James Brown Yes I am probably related to all of the Browning families and their descendants. When I look at the remaining families I see that I am related conservatively to 85% of the families in Clearfork District and Huff Creek District. Question What books have been written on these families? I am aware of the Cook Family History (I really like the idea of 10,000 Cook descendants!) If we had books on the Walker, Browning, Toler, Vance,Morgan, Grimmett, Paynter and other families with 10,000 descendants on each family. We would have a terrific set of books. Yes there would be duplication but who cares - we would be preserving our family records. I am aware of the Browning books being written My Toler book is getting huge. Many more Toler than Burgess names! My Burgess book is ready to go. Has there been a book written on the Blankenship Family? If so how do I get a copy? We need books on the Vance and Walker families. I have a copy of the Vance book written by Mr Ferrell I personally believe that it would be a wonderful thing if our cousins who are not into family history could go to a library in Wyoming or Logan County and find books on all of these families. Our Children and Grand Children would not have to do all the research that we have done. What more can we leave our family? NOTE: I way way way WAY underestimated how closely related I am to families in Huff Creek and Clearfork Districts of Wyoming County. Every day I am more and more convinced that we need to work together to write these books and get them into libraries in West Virginia. These are NOT a money making ventures but an effort to leave West Virginia with great family histories. I would like to encourage everyone on this mailing list and others that we have an influence over to write well documented family histories. We have lost a lot of wonderful people in the family history community in Boone, Logan, and Wyoming County. Some of their records went with them. As wonderful as family web sites are they will one day go away. Our family history books will survive for years to come. Jim Burgess

Anita, The Pruits m. into the Ferrell family of Chapmanville; Arthur Ferrell's wife was a Pruitt. So some of them may be buried in the Ferrell cemetry , on StRt 10. Another Pruitt family lived on the Airport Road, but their given names escapes me. Will dig into my notes & come up with more. Shelby
Shelby, Thank you so much. I have been working on a line for a cousin and turns out that his grandmother's maiden name was Pruitt. Thru the death certificates online, I was also able to discover that his great grandparents - James Daniel Pruitt and America Rice Pruitt are buried at Crooked Creek as are several of other Pruitts. I also found out that my great grandmother Barton's brother had two children that married into this same line of Pruitts and I am thinking that at least one of them is also buried at Crooked Creek. I would be very grateful for the names of the Pruitts who are buried there. Anita
Hi Anita; Crooked creek is about4 miles north of Logan.I think I have a list of the graves there; will do a lookup for you.I knew two ww2 vets buried there, Robt. & Roy White, s/o Winfred & Bessie(Patrick) White. Shelby
I'm not sure if I passed this on before, but I just transcribed into my database so I though I'd pass it along. This looks like it's from a series of articles in the Logan Banner. I'm not sure when this was written as a family member just cut out the article and photocopied it for me. They don't even know when it was written. Perhaps someone who works at the Banner or knows of someone there might know when the author Twila worked there. NAMES AND Their ORIGIN - No. 3 County Residents Urged To Help Trace Local Names By TWILA DOUTT From week to week as stories of the naming of Logan County's cities, villages, branches, creeks and hollows are recounted, ma[n]y of you will undoubtedly have heard other versions of the origination of some of the county's names. You will also know of names-such as discontinued post offices and abandoned mining camps-which my trek through the county did not reveal. Would you send those stories and names to me at Box 305, Chapmanville or call UL-5-4662 after five p.m. The items you send in will be included in this column at a later date. Baker Branch is a small right tributary of West Fork or Marsh Fork in Chapmanville District. It is shown on the highway maps and on the Holden Quadrangle geological survey map but is not named on them. The late Julius Dingess said this branch was named for a man named Baker who was the first settler in this area. In his History of Logan County, Henry Clay Ragland recorded a John Baker's going to Crawley Creek and settling. (Though Baker Branch is a tributary of West or Marsh Fork, Baker could have easily gone over either Pit or Striker Fork from Crawley Creek to get to his new home.) Baldwin Fork is a right tribut-ary of Hewett Creek, Logan Dis-trict, and is shown on the Logan County highway maps. According to Judge C. C. Chamb-ers, Shady Baldwin, a Civil War Veteran, lived on this fork at the mouth of Raccoon Branch and the fork was undoubtedly named for him. Balls Branch is a right tributary of Craddock Fork of Hewett Creek, Logan District. The Logan Quadrangle geological survey map of 1950 lists this branch. Henry Clay Ragland named Ball as being one of the families of early settlers in the county, and Judge Chambers said this branch was named for the father of J. B. Ball, who lived there long ago. Banco is post office on Big Creek in Chapmanville District. All the maps since 1933 name Banco, but no information regarding its naming has been discovered. Bandmill Hollow is a right tributary of Dingess Run, Logan District. The highway maps and the Logan Quadrangle geological sur-vey map mark this hollow. Mrs., Alice Mullins of Blair said a family by the name of Foley had a large band saw mill on this hollow. The band mills were larger than the ordinary saw mills and the equipment included a large belt which was called a band. Though no map lists the name Melville, Mrs., Mullins went on to say that for the past ten years this area has gone by Melville for the Melville mine of Jewell Eagle Coal Co. Barker Fork is a left tributary of Big Creek, Chapmanville Dis-trict listed on the Logan Quad-rangle geological survey map of 1950. The late Edward Chapman said this branch was name for George Barker. Barnabus is a village and post office at the mouth of Cow Creek, Logan District. A Logan County Map of 1933 is the first map to list this post office. ".....Two brothers and a brother-in-law from North Carolina..... made a settlement at quite an early date--thought to be about 1812. These brothers were Frances and Edward Browning and the brother-in-law was Barnabus Curry," is a statement from Ragland's History of Logan County. The village and post office were probably named in memory of this settler.

Jim, I think I mentioned to you once before that as a young man working out of Pineville, my work regularly took me to the Coal Mountain region, of which you write. The road from Justice to Long Branch was not in existence at that time and one's only choice was to go through Sun Hill, up over the mountain to Simon and down Long Branch and then eventually up Cub Creek to Guyan and Coal Mountain. I was selling, delivering and making collections for a furniture store as a convenience to the customers who couldn't make it into the store. Many people bought their furniture and appliances that way without having even seen the items they purchased before they were delivered. There was no electricity and the roads were unpaved and rutted along much of that torturous route, although Coal Mountain was a modern coal camp like an oasis in a desert and did not suffer those inconveniences. There were places along Long Branch and Reedy Creek, when they were improving those roads, that were impassable in wet weather and the State Road crews would use their road graders to push my truck over the obstacles. My work took me into every "nook and cranny" of that area. Many of the residents were farmers who also worked in the mines at Coal Mountain and many were quite wealthy by the standards of the time. Because of the isolation and their frugal nature, they spent very little on anything other than the bare necessities of life. Except for the young men who considered me a rival for the affections of some of the local girls, I have never experienced hospitality such as was shown to me by those simple mountain folks. It was virtually impossible to get away from some of them without sharing a meal and/or lengthy conversation. I remember, in particular, one lady who was well into her eighties and who lived alone and spent hours on her front porch listening to major league baseball games on a battery powered radio. She was a walking baseball encyclopedia, and relished my weekly visits and our arguments as to who was the better batter, Ted Williams or Stan Musial. Her last name was Toler; I don't think I ever knew her first. Another vivid memory is of me and my partner having to deliver a 400-pound iron cook stove down over a bluff and then across the Guyandotte on a home made wooden boat. I still think that was a better choice than using the long swinging bridge, which was the only other means of access from the road. Since those times, I have moved in considerably different circles. Now I am embarrassed to say that I know fewer than half the people on my street, while at that time, I was acquainted with half the people between Sun Hill and Guyan. I can't help but feel some pangs of nostalgia when I think or hear of those friendly people who were so much of my heritage. As Thomas Wolfe wrote, we can't go home again. We may return to the places, but we can't return to the times and people who were there when we were growing up. Thank you for indulging an old man and his memories of much simpler, and in many ways more rewarding, times. Jim, Joseph and Elizabeth (Toler) Farley are in the 1850 Wyoming County census in household 25 and William and Lucy (Clark) Farley are with Henry Clark in household 199. I believe you are correct that I have this wrong and that William Farley is the s/o William and Virginia (Sawyer) Farley. His brother John Farley was in household 214 in the 1850 Wyoming County census.
