    3. Gracie, Barbara's husband was James Vance, ~Sr.~, b. ca 1795. I haven't found that James' middle name was Howard. It's logical that it might be because it was his mother's maiden name...but I've never seen it in writing anyplace except in other's data without documentation. James and Barbara named their 1st born Michael....probably after her father. I've seen no documented proof of that, either. Their first daughter was named Susanne after James' mother. James & Barbara's last-born child, a son named Thomas Jefferson Vance, was born 6 Oct 1841 in Jackson Co., OH. He was called "Col. John" in the 1850 Boone Co., VA census. He must have looked like his uncle or mimicked him. I descend from the James & Barbara's 5th child Marcena or Marsena, b. 1828 in (W)VA. She was later called Marcella but I don't know if that was really her name. a list of the Vance kids has turned up in the KS-MO-OK area with descendants of Thomas J. It has the children who were already married and out of the home by the 1850 census. Kansas is where James and Barbara died.... arriving there separately because they were divorced in 1858. I am making a descendants' chart right now...descendants only....and I'll send it next. Carole

    3. I have done considerable research into the Workman families of our area of southern WV. The following is from an introduction to my own unpublished personal history: "Joseph Workman is believed to be the main ancestor of the early Workman families of southern West Virginia. Three of his sons first came to the Island, which is now a part of present-day Logan city, and eventually settled in surrounding areas of southern (West) Virginia. Joseph and James, sons of Joseph and Phoebe Workman, are credited as being the first white settlers in the area now known as Boone County.1 They took up the land for many miles along the Big Coal River, the major river in the area. As their children grew up, they settled on the different little streams and tributaries of the Coal until the entire country from below what is now Van, West Virginia, to the headwaters at Bald Knob on both sides of the river was owned by Workmans and their descendants. Jacob, the third son, settled primarily in what is now Wayne County, West Virginia. Others of Joseph’s and Phoebe’s family remained near their parents in the Burke’s Garden area of Tazewell County." This is an extremely interesting family as they first moved from Scotland to Holland then back to England before coming to New York state. Since my objectives were quite specific, being limited to my own family interests, my work needs to be expanded to include the recent generations. I am willing to share what I have with those who would be interested in a Workman research project similar to what has been underway for the Tolers. Let me see a show of hands. 3. Oh, goodness. My mother descends from the Branhams of Virginia. This means my Indiana-born mother and West Virginia-born father who met in Georgia were probably related. I'd like to obtain a copy of the book. Is everyone aware of the web site for BooksWeOwn? It's a volunteer site and the set up procedure is a bit intricate and hard to follow through the legalese, but thorough. I've found the volunteers and the response time are quick and complete. 3. For those of us who love genealogy, writing and sharing, but have never gone through the process of producing a book, I have to ask, how do you do it? What is the procedure? We have our databases, our scrapbooks and family photos. We have probably logged some family history stories told to us by our elders into the Notes section of the data base. That stuff that never makes it into data bases of the state vital records - like Joe had an affair with his next-door neighbor Tom's wife and two of her kids are by Joe. How do we handle sensitive issues other than omission or a course in diplomacy? I think my living relatives might disown me if I opened the door to the family closet. Yet, genealogically speaking - I would be lying if I put out certain segments of my database. Do you have a specific publisher you use? It's the old forest instead of the trees thing. The project seems intimidating, but only because I've never done it. I sometimes think it's a West Virginia thing, as no where else do I hear so often that no one would be interested in those old stories. I am and I love them. Those old stories are what makes my ancestors come alive. Without the stories, they are merely statistics in a book. Sue >============================== >View and search Historical Newspapers. 3. Rick, Is your Margaret COMPTON Kinder, from the COMPTON's of Bluestone/Bland/Tazewell, VA? From what I see on the documentation on your John Kinder I, he is from that area....so, I suspect your Margaret is, too. I do COMPTON geneaology, and this area of VA is where my line originates. I can put you into contact with a couple of COMPTON researchers of this particular line, who have researched these COMPTON's indepth, for whom might be able to help you figure out who is Margaret's parents, or at least lead you in the right direction, if you are interested? I would have never found anything out about my daddy's mothers family if someone had not written a book for my grandmother's mother lost her husband when my grandmother was 6 mos old. My gr grandmother then moved to another state and remarried. I will probably never know who my great grandad was for I do not know his first name and I have never gotten any responses except how to look him up which is appreciated........1890.....does that explain things. I have been blessed with the detailed info on many tombstones where my many family lines have been buried for over 100 years, also. I was overwhelmed when I found a huge book about my dad's other side. I am glad to share with anyone. I need to send what I have when someone writes me which I usually do. My computer crashed and it has taken me years to get things back on and still not finished. That is a lesson in you should backup information almost daily. I have searched for the last backup and have not found the latest. I learned to never give up hope when putting a query in a newspaper or other methods for after many months after placing the request I got a call from a lady who owned the land where my great great grandparents on my gr grandmother's side and other family members were buried. They cleared the land each year and they and their five children and families plan to be buried there. I asked her to have the genealogical society to read it and it now published. So now I have another reference. I do like to share for everyone knows a different part of the family history. I do not just copy what they have written as "the word", but I then go and research and make sure it is correct. I have had some people who would not recognize that we descended from the same line for as many as 10 plus years and all of a sudden they get the connection and give me a call. I have given everything I have on each family line as someone asks especially to the younger ones who are anxious to find out info and research. I have just asked that they share with me. Most have, but some have put it on the internet as their research which is my fault for I did not put it on there first, but many have given me credit which I appreciate. I discovered that I did have many things wrong and I took it off to correct for like most of us work late at night and have had 5 back surgeries and the usual other life stuff the past 10 years plus and I admit I make mistakes, but hopefully I catch them or people will catch them for me and let me know. If we dont work together there is so much that will never be known. I would just appreciate it if someone doesnt want to share if they will just give me a county or state or name and let me go after it. It would be terrible if people did not write books and have them placed in the libraries to share. They are giving a piece of history that will be preserved forever. I am not intelligent enough to write a book although it would be fun, but I would like to have as much info as I could before making a book so would never make it possible. HA! My next project is to learn to scan...found my directions again. I hope this will help those who want to share and those who do not want to share think about how it helps others as well as themselves. My gr grandad Vance died when I was 20. He was my idol. I only wish that I had listened to his stories more and recorded them. Cheryl Walters Parr Dorthea Jean Bradford Lorena Maye Vance b 02 Jan 1905 Garner TX Parker CO (bet. Gosh, if what I have been reading about Abner Vance and family is true, someone would make a movie about it. Whew!!!!!! Blew my mind!! I was researching Barbara Miller and James Howard Vance Jr (my mother's 2nd ggrand aunt and uncle). Am wondering if anyone could tell me who James Howard's parents were, for sure. Barbara was daughter of: Micheal Miller and Mary Elizabeth Smith, if I have all this right. Who, btw, were my mom's 3rd ggrandparents. That is what my tree program tells me anyway. G

    2. My paternal great grandmother was a Kinder. If I am not mistaken, they lived in the Ashord area. The cemetary is nearby at Costa. I have no idea what year they arrived in that area. I've heard different accounts. One would have Margaret Compton Kinder, widow of John Kinder I, in the Marmet area in 1790. She married a Javins the second time. 3. If it counts for anything, I am EXTREMELY grateful for the people who write their family history. 2. Newport is the old name for Danville,WV; no ways near Ashford. As for the Workmans,Kinders, Barkers being the first settlers, I cannot believe. In the history of Boone county there is no mention of them being in combat with the Indians, but the Toneys sure f ought them. The root diggers were there first (genseng). The Dempseys in Logan county dug seng too.The pretty little hollow named Dempsey Camp was named for one of their root encampments, at Blair. Shelby

There is a death certificate for Margaret Belle Adkins who was 53 y/o who died 10/11/1918. There is nothing listed for her parents. Any one have a clue who she belongs to? Thanks! Laura
