I would have never found anything out about my daddy's mothers family if someone had not written a book for my grandmother's mother lost her husband when my grandmother was 6 mos old. My gr grandmother then moved to another state and remarried. I will probably never know who my great grandad was for I do not know his first name and I have never gotten any responses except how to look him up which is appreciated........1890.....does that explain things. I have been blessed with the detailed info on many tombstones where my many family lines have been buried for over 100 years, also. I was overwhelmed when I found a huge book about my dad's other side. I am glad to share with anyone. I need to send what I have when someone writes me which I usually do. My computer crashed and it has taken me years to get things back on and still not finished. That is a lesson in you should backup information almost daily. I have searched for the last backup and have not found the latest. I learned to never give up hope when putting a query in a newspaper or other methods for after many months after placing the request I got a call from a lady who owned the land where my great great grandparents on my gr grandmother's side and other family members were buried. They cleared the land each year and they and their five children and families plan to be buried there. I asked her to have the genealogical society to read it and it now published. So now I have another reference. I do like to share for everyone knows a different part of the family history. I do not just copy what they have written as "the word", but I then go and research and make sure it is correct. I have had some people who would not recognize that we descended from the same line for as many as 10 plus years and all of a sudden they get the connection and give me a call. I have given everything I have on each family line as someone asks especially to the younger ones who are anxious to find out info and research. I have just asked that they share with me. Most have, but some have put it on the internet as their research which is my fault for I did not put it on there first, but many have given me credit which I appreciate. I discovered that I did have many things wrong and I took it off to correct for like most of us work late at night and have had 5 back surgeries and the usual other life stuff the past 10 years plus and I admit I make mistakes, but hopefully I catch them or people will catch them for me and let me know. If we dont work together there is so much that will never be known. I would just appreciate it if someone doesnt want to share if they will just give me a county or state or name and let me go after it. It would be terrible if people did not write books and have them placed in the libraries to share. They are giving a piece of history that will be preserved forever. I am not intelligent enough to write a book although it would be fun, but I would like to have as much info as I could before making a book so would never make it possible. HA! My next project is to learn to scan...found my directions again. I hope this will help those who want to share and those who do not want to share think about how it helps others as well as themselves. My gr grandad Vance died when I was 20. He was my idol. 3. I am also a member of the BCGS, but living in Florida prohibits my meeting attendance. In defense of the BCGS, and once program chair for another organization, I'd have to remind ya'll the group does not always know or support what the speaker blurts out. They merely invite them to speak, generally know the topic and provide any supports needed (slide machine, video and tv, etc.). Sometimes it's informative, wise and witty; other times it's a complete bust. I would think that's what happened here. Without our Yankee forefathers, it wouldn't be West Virginia, now, would it? 1. Blair Mountain
    2. From the Charleston Gazette May 11, 200 May 11, 2006 Blair Mountain on endangered list Site of union battle joins 10 other historical places in trouble By Paul J. Nyden Staff writer The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Blair Mountain as one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places on Wednesday. In 1921, armed union coal miners marched from Marmet toward Logan to confront Logan County Sheriff Don Chafin, whose hired deputies and guards were protecting his county’s nonunion coal mines from United Mine Workers organizers. The battle that developed along Spruce Fork Ridge on Blair Mountain was the largest armed labor conflict in U.S. history, a pivotal event often forgotten today. Greg Coble, vice president of the National Trust, said, “We have been doing this for 20 years. Blair Mountain is the first West Virginia site we put on our list. “There is no other place in America where you can tell this kind of a story. Our intention is to save the history of the site. We are calling for a dialog between the coal industry and preservationists,” Coble said during a press conference at the state Cultural Center. “Past preservation efforts [for Blair Mountain] have failed because of fierce opposition from the coal companies that own or lease most of the ridge,” the National Trust stated in a news release. “Hobet Mining, Arch Coal, Massey Energy Co. and Aracoma Coal Co., among others, are intent on strip mining, which would destroy the battlefield.” Coble, who graduated from George Washington High School and West Virginia University, said, “We want protected, public access for these 1,600 acres, so the story can be told. You can still find bullets and remnants of old fortifications from the battle. “This is a piece of history the state has turned its back on,” Coble said. The National Trust’s news release added, “By increasing public awareness of the significance of the Blair Mountain battlefield, preservation advocates hope to win support for permanently protecting the site with easements and developing an ... interpretative program, possibly through the National Coal Heritage Area. Denise Giardina, whose 1987 novel “Storming Heaven” focused on the Battle of Blair Mountain, said, “It would be terribly sad if books like mine became the only places Blair Mountain existed.” William Blizzard also came to support preservation efforts. His father, Bill, was the most prominent union leader put on trial for treason, and later found innocent, for helping lead the 1921 battle. Blizzard recently published “When Miners March: The Story of Coal Miners in West Virginia,” a collection of articles he wrote in the 1950s about Blair Mountain. Other historic sites on the National Trust’s 2006 list include: the retirement home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Mississippi; historic New Orleans neighborhoods and homes; Doo Wop motels in Wildwood, N.J., named after the popular 1950s singing style; Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, home to generations of immigrant families; and the Vesey Street Staircase that survived the Sept. 11 attacks at the World Trade Center. Richard Moe, president of the National Trust, said, “The sites on this year’s 11 Most Endangered list embody the diversity and complexity of America’s story, and the variety of threats that endanger it.” To contact staff writer Paul J. Nyden, use e-mail or call 348-5164.

    1. Hello Boone County
    2. There is a discussion on the Logan Co. list regarding the first white settlers in Boone Co. and the first settlement in Boone Co. Some say the Kinders, Workmans, and Barkers were the first settlers. Others say the Toney (Tawney) clan. and, the Smoots and Prices are mentioned. Does anyone know who the first settlers were and the first settlement? One very knowledgable list member believes Whitesville was the first settlement. I am a Kinder descendent through my great grandmother Mahala Kinder Stewart. Mahala was a daughter of John Kinder and Mary Holstein. The above John Kinder was the son of John Kinder and Mary Ward who married in 1809. I have read that the marriage was a double ceremony with John's twin sister Barbara Kinder marrying John Preston. This marriage was in then Kanawha Co. John was the son of a Col. Preston and Mary was the daughter of James Ward, a scout for Col. Preston so it is said. I have read accounts of a John Kinder who married Margaret Compton being the father of John Kinder who married Mary Ward. According to the story, Margaret Compton's mother was a captive of the Miami Indians and that her father was a Miami brave. True or false? As the story goes John and Margaret (Compton) Kinder lived in a fort at the mouth of the Big Coal River where it empties into the Kanawha River. This is present St. Albans. According to the story, around 1789 or 1790, John Kinder was killed in an Indian raid on the fort - Fort Tackett? Margaret Compton Kinder and her twins John Kinder II and Barbara Kinder were spared due to being part Indian. Margaret and the twins walked to another fort near present day Marmet. There Margaret met and married Daniel Javins Sr. Thus, Margaret is the matriarch of the Kinder and Javins clans. I am a Javins descendent as well through another marriage later on. SW VA had many Kinders and Comptons. It seems logical that our Kinders and Comptons came from that area around Monroe, Giles Cos. But, does logic count in genealogy? This is a link of the men who fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~varockbr/pntplsnt.htm> On this list you will find Kinders. Also, I believe this list of soldiers in the Battle of Point Pleasant contains names of many of our first settlers in now WVa. It is divided into companies, etc. and has many names. Can anyone help me on the Kinder-Compton marriage? Also, the first white settlers in Boone and the first settlement in Boone? My thanks. Rick Stewart Researching: Stewart Kinder Holstein Ward Javins Compton Belcher Jarrell Brown Coon and more in Boone Co.

    1. Re: Re: [WVLOGAN] Rick-- Boone County first white settlers
    2. Hello Sandi - I added Boone Co. on to this response. There are many Kinder descendents still in Boone and some are on the list if it is still active. I do not know how much of the story about Margaret Compton Kinder Javins is correct. I have the Boone Co. Kith and Kin on the Kinders. It begins with my ggg grandfather John Kinder b. 1786 who married Mary Ward in Sept. 1809 in Kanawha Co. There is much speculation on his father. I have him as John Kinder as well but no documentation. His wife was Margaret Compton. I have no info on Margaret other than comments on web sites that her mother was a captive of the Miami Indians. Her father was a Miami brave per some researchers. I would appreciate any info on the Comptons of SW VA. BOONE CO. LIST: Please help me regarding info on the early Kinders and Margaret Compton - the matriarch of the Kinder and Javins clans. There is a discussion on the Logan list regarding the first white settlers of Boone Co. Some say the Toneys (Tawneys) and others say the Kinders, Workmans, and Barkers. Someone else mentioned the Prices and Smoots. Thank you. 3. Sue, If you write like I do and don't mind a few misplaced commas, split infinitives and dangling modifiers, I suggest you publish it yourself. I have used and am impressed with LULU Press. You can get an education concerning on demand publishing by ringing in on <lulu.com>. I think they, and others like them, are a godsend for those who wish to preserve their family histories. LULU provides good instructions, but I would be glad to walk you through the process if you still have questions. By the way I do not own stock in LULU. The thing that led me to them in the first place, is that they they are one of only a few who do not require an up-front investment. As an example, you might want to follow my case. You can visit my storefront at LULU by searching my name or try one of the following <lulu.com/content/113275> or <lulu.com/content/284490>.
