Getting kids clothes clean back in 1930s was some job. There were only two choices: scrub the clothes on a washboard, or boil them.Boiling them got the dirt out, but damaged the threads, and they didnt last as long. After the clothes were laundered, they had to be ironed with a "Sad" iron. The iron was heated on the cook stove, no electricity in most homes back then. Those were the days !! Shelby

Whew, had to delete the first message and calm down. To answer Rick, YES. The coal companies will take every mountain, ruin every stream and river in WV unless stopped. Also the surrounding states. Enter your zip code and see what has been going on. http://zoomer.sierraclub.org/# http://www.ohvec.org/galleries/mountaintop_removal/index.html http://www.americanrivers.org/site/PageServer http://magazine.audubon.org/incite/incite0105.html http://www.wvdnr.gov/Hunting/BGB2004BoarWildBoar.shtm JOIN the organizations, E-MAIL senators/congress persons. SIGN petitions. Picket, if you feel you must. I found the people with t-shirts from a link in Grist. You may be able to check their archives. The article was about West Virginia and coal companies and mines. It came about the time all those miners were killed early this year from the mine explosion. Sorry, I have to block out some things. Just thought, WVLOGAN archives should have one of the links from Grist. http://www.grist.org/ I have been signing petitions for quite a while. Not sure if they pay much attention to someone from so far away. But I sign them anyway. I had looked at the pictures quite a while ago. It sickened me to see. I can't remember what the coal companies call what they do to strip the tops off of the mountains. Shelby, I think we discussed it a few months ago. Gracie

Caroline, John is my Great Great Grandfather, through my Great Grandfather George Herman Lewis. I have a copy of pages out of a Lewis family bible, but it doesn't give much information, other than births - it lists 14 Lewis births. The first 2 are John H. Lewis born Feb 25th 1844 and Lucy Ann Lewis born April 26, 1850. On page 2, in handwriting, the writer (unknown) states that the record was started in England, and the 1st born in the U.S. was Albert Henry Lewis (4/12/1881). I was always under the impression that the Lewis family was from Ireland, but this points to England. I also have a Frasier/Frazier book that was published, and it mentions Bennie Wilson Frazier marrying George Lewis. According to the book, George worked in the mines at Sun, near Glen Jean. In 1924 they moved to Dehue (where my grandmother and mother were born). I have a copy of the 1920 census, Sun Precinct, that lists George, Bennie and 6 of their children. This is in Fayette county at the time (don't know if it still is). That's about all that I have been able to find out. If you find any additional information, please let me/us know. How are you related to John Lewis? - Dave Browning. Entire Birth list in Lewis Bible: John H. Lewis 2/25/1844 Lucy Ann Lewis 4/26/1850 Margaret Ann Lewis 12/18/1874 Phebe Jane Lewis 10/30/1876 Albert Henry Lewis 4/12/1881 (1st born in USA) Alice Mau Mary Lewis 4/12/1883 William John Lewis 4/1/1885 George Herman Lewis 12/13/1889 (my Gr grandfather) Walter or Walker David Lewis 5/23/1890 Sarah Florance Lewis 5/14/1892 Hubert Thomas Lewis 12/3/1898 2 other non-Lewis names: Lucy ann Loney or Lowey or Lovey (can't tell) 12/26/1896 ???? Another excellent book on the Walker family was written by Glennis Walker in 1991: The History of the Walker Family, 1734-1990 : & Their Kindred with Related Incidents ( Cool Ridge, West Virginia : G.R. Walker, 1991). This 725-page, down-to-earth reference has much that is applicable to our Walker kin in West Virginia. I understand that Glennis is dead now, but his book may be available at heritage book stores. The progenitor of this line of the Walker family in America is credited to the migration of Thomas Walker from England, and settlement in Orange County, Virginia in 1734. He married Elizabeth Taylor ca. 1738. Thomas was a large planter, and enjoyed a well organized plantation proprietor's life, having ownership to widespread tracts of land in Orange and surrounding counties, including many Negro slaves, holdings and improvements. Descendants of Thomas Walker lived in Virginia, West Virginia and elsewhere. This Thomas Walker Walker is not to be confused with another Thomas Walker (1715-1794) who was a doctor, statesman, soldier and explorer.
