In the spirit of Memorial Day, thought one of dad's letters near that date might be okay to post. A taste of a WWII soldier's life. Air mail seems to get out here in two days. Should hear from you tomorrow, that is if you are in any shape to write. I want to know everything. [Mom was in the hospital, I'd just been born.] This V-E day doesn't mean too much here. All military personnel are restricted for 48-hours. We had to stand at parade today at 5:00 o'clock, fell out at 3:30 to get in formation. Must have been 10,000 men on the field. The sun was terrible hot, men folded up and passed out all around, must have been fifty passed out. This high altitude, app. 5000 feet and hot sun, plus over an hour standing in formation, was more than the men could take. I came through alright but couldn't have lasted much longer. Well, dearest, from the way men are coming in someone has to leave soon. Tomorrow my flight goes up in the mountain to fire carbine and machine guns. It is about 3 miles up there. Think we will be alerted this week. Still have no idea where we are going. One group went out not long ago, went to Russia and we have already got a lecture on cold climate. Do you need cigarettes? Sure a hard job to mail anything out of here, got about 5 miles to walk but if you want cigarettes tell me. If I am here will fix you up. Got plenty of candy here, up until yesterday could buy a box but not any more. We are starting to get a little PT, taking it in GI shoes, leggings and coveralls, sure is rough baby. Am only hoping Japan will fold up soon so this thing will be over. Say, that letter I wrote you Sunday and put the pictures and silver dollar in the letter, it was awful heavy, took it to the PO this morning and the PM said it would go free, so it went out today at noon, you will know when to expect it. Am sending you a copy of the CAMP KEARNS newspaper. Mailing it tonight, but FREE. I am awful tired tonight so must quit for tonight. I love you. Your husband, Mac Ps-We are having a dust storm and had wind, just put all windows down and closed the door. Looks like we may have to put on gas mask. Some wind and dust! Mac June 28, 1945 TO: Mrs. Betty Webb, 294 Matheson Dr., Macon, Georgia FROM: T/Sgt. M. Webb, 15018667, Sq.A-5-APO-19491-A, c/o PM, San Francisco, Cal. VIA AIR MAIL .06 cent stamp. "West Coast." Dearest Darling: Received your two letters today that you wrote last Tuesday and Wednesday. Life is very quiet around here tonight, only a few of us in the barracks. Most of the fellows are in town, trying to catch up on everything for the bad days ahead. Was in with HILL last night, walked in to the nearest one, and drank quite a bit of beer. So we are staying in tonight, but went to the PX for a beer. This stuff on the field, well, I just don't care for it, but they do have good beer in town. Maybe I should have went in tonight, hope to make it tomorrow if we can get passes. If no passes, well, we'll just spend another night on the base like the ones at Kearns. Rather lonesome here tonight, if there is any thing I hate to hear it is a boat whistle. They seem to be trying to outdo themselves tonight. It sure sounds lonesome when we know it won't be long until one will take us out. I am getting some practice on the future - writing. The mosquitos are worse here than in Macon. The barracks doesn't have screens so they are rather thick. I have my mosquito net on my bed and writing from under the net. Will probably get lots of that before I see you again. I think it's mostly about James Dolliver Brown and his large family - all of his children and their families. Alice Harrison is the granddaughter of James Dolliver Brown and Bethena Alice Toler. Here's something that Alice Harrison wrote: James Dolliver Brown, son of Issac and Isabel Brown, was born April 15, 1849, departed this life January 23, 1929, age 79 years. He was a native of Logan County, having been born and reared here. He was first united in marriage to Nancy H. Toler on January 1, 1869 and to this union six children were born. Following the death of Nancy in 1882, he married Alice B. Toler, her sister, on September 21, 1882. We do not know the cause of death, but it had been told to us on several occasions that Alice was staying with them at the time of her illness to help out and they were married shortly after. To this union were born eleven children. We do not know where they lived at this time but we are assuming somewhere on Big Huff Creek, but on July 5, 1893 James Dolliver bought 76 acres below the Claypool Church and there he remained raising his family. He was the highest bidder for this property, which was $50.50. It was purchased from the Logan County School of Lands. The School of Lands was established by the state to dispose of unclaimed property and delinquent tax property in order to have people settle in different areas. This is a hand/written deed recorded in the Logan County court House, which was searched by Alice Harrison and her son, Eddie. The majority of all the family still living did not have the privilege of visiting in the home of Grandma and Grandpa's as he died in 1929 and Grandma soon broke up housekeeping after that. I remember bug gardens, fruit trees and especially the red raspberries along the road leading to the house. Others remember the old well, and the branch behind the house with such pretty clean water. The old log house, which had some rooms added on, was nestled between two large mountains. On the level ground they raised all of their vegetables, had their barn and chicken house near by, and back on the mountain they had what they called "new grounds" where they raised corn and usually potatoes. Everything was hard to come by, but I am sure they had so much happiness, as well as sorrow, but they knew how to cope. They had to have great faith in God. The Claypool Methodist church was soon built in 1886. James Dolliver was converted among the Methodists in 1881. He assisted in building the old Claypool Chapel, which still stands, having scored the logs with broad/axe along with Rev A.J. Workman, Chapman Harless, Dow Hinchman, C.C. McVey. The land was given for the church by William Claypool. Many revival sessions occurred in this little church. Grandma and Grandpa's home was always open for visitors and the visiting ministers were always welcome to stay. The above was written by Alice Harrison. Dear Logan County Genealogist and cousins, On the next email I am going to send a compilation on James Dolliver Brown - Nancy Toler - Bethena Alice Toler In no way do I claim that this information is completely correct. I do believe that it should be a beginning to our discussing our families. I am open to corrections, comments, more information. I need your suggestions on how we should lay out the childrens of both marriages. I need your suggestions. When most of us agree that this information is correct (after corrections have been made - We can post the record. Do we have deeds or more information that should be included? Where did he get the name "Bad Hair" I cannot document this! Can we discuss this family? Lastly we should file these evaluations under each family name in our computers (in my humble opinion!) Thanks Jim Burgess

Jim: Congratulations to the group on the great progress on the Toler family research. I have been mostly an innocent bystander but would like to make a couple of suggestions anyway. First, I think one of the best sources of information for determining people locations is the Virginia personal property tax lists. The early tax records of the Virginian counties still survive and list all individuals charged with a tax. Except for 1808, they should be variously available for all Virginia Counties from about 1780 to modern times. The Logan records are partially available at the Logan Website as a result of the diligent efforts of Vicie Fowler and Donna Brown. An effort is underway elsewhere to get all the Virginia records for 1790 and 1800 on line. (Note: there are no surviving Virginia census records for those years, and the tax lists have been used as an alternative to the census for the missing 1790 and 1800 Federal Censuses of Virginia.) My second comment is: There needs to be some special way to let the general public know of the credibility of your study. Otherwise, those outside your circle will not be able to differentiate from the multitude of files that have not been as carefully constructed as yours. Stan, Thanks for your comments. I agree completely. At this point in time I have several more months of work to get done what I need to do. You are correct on the Tax List. The problem is that I have so many other irons in the fire, I just need more time. For some reason, my work has been much better on this project than it has been on others. I believe that readers will be very happy with the documentation. Right now I want to keep my nose to the grind stone to this project in hand. As stated before I want to get to 10,000 names and 1,000 pages of documentation and families. I am almost 75% of the way there. My plans are to post this information on my web site when I get to the 90% area. It is my hope that people will be pleased to find their family and the documentation a surprise. I am really enjoying this project - the people who are helping me are wonderful. Have never had so much help. My motivation is high and I am plugging along - if the suns would lose I would be a lot further along. Sill do not know who much to send you for the Browning Book thanks Jim Burgess -----Original Message----- From: STANLEY BROWNING [mailto:garnet@utah-inter.net] Sent: Thursday, May 25, 2006 1:04 PM To: WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BULK][WVLOGAN] Sources to be included for Logan Wyoming County Toler families and other families - Join our Toler Mailing List Jim: Congratulations to the group on the great progress on the Toler family research. I believe we should limit each family coverage to one week; we are not all Tolers, or any other one group familys. Let everyone speak & answer. Shelby
Dear Friends, Toler Family Connections is being organized - if you would like to join our group just enter subscribe in the Subject line at TolerFamilyConnections@yahoogroups.com Anyone who is a descendant of or interested in the family of David Toler and Susanna of Giles,Logan, Wyoming, County, Virginia and West Virginia are invited to join us. We should remind you that there are a lot of other surnames that married into the Toler family. Some are Brown, Grimmett, Blankenship, Cline, Morgan, Smith, Paynter, Hatfield, Burgess, etc Question? (What should we include as source information on each family?) Can we discuss what sources and documentation should be included? What Sources do we have available? Census Records 1800-1930 Reference Book of Wyoming County, West Virginia Wyoming County Birth Marriage Death Wills Wyoming County Deed Books (need help on this one!) West Virginia Death Records http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_mcsearch.aspx Logan County Birth Death and Marriage Records Logan County Deed books & Wills (need help on this!) History of Logan County by Henry Clay Ragland World War I Draft Registration What other records should we include? How should we submit information to Toler Family Connections a. May I propose that we discuss one or two proposed families at a time on the mailing list. b. Send the information to the group c. Share information with each other and correct mistakes! d. Put the information in date order. e. Identify each source clearly. f. One person would volunteer for one family to organize information on that family. We should call this person Administrator for James Dolliver Brown! g. When the group agrees that we have the information correct we post the information to Toler Family Connections. h. The information should be in date order for the events that occured. i. The subject line should have the family being discussed and the administrator for that family. ie James Dolliver Brown 1940-1929 - Administrator -Jim Burgess j. When we agree that the information is correct we should post that information in our data bases and on our web site by family ie James Dolliver Brown 1849 - 1929. (Just in case we have two people with the same name.) k. I will put the information in the notes section to be printed in The Toler Family Book. l. We should include stories etc in these notes. Our goal should be to have accurate information that is not cluttered with incorrect information. Since we have been discussing James "Bad Hair" Dolliver Brown and his wives Nancy Toler and Bethena Alice Toler I would like to ask that we use this family as our first prototype. Where did he get the name "Bad Hair"? I would like to send the documentation for James Dolliver Brown's family this evening so that we can discuss the documentation. We do need a way to see the family with children their vital statistics and spouses. Any discussion on any of the above? Jim Burgess
