    3. >>I asked him if he knew where the cemetery was. He pointed it to me and >>found out he was a Plumley as well.<< The same thing happened to my cousin and I in the mountains of NH several years ago. We were on a two week search of our ancestors and had left our college aged kids at home in Oregon with lots of peanut butter and tuna fish . We got to the top of a steep hill and there was the town hall and the church and nothing else. It seemed that the buildings on the hilltop kept burning down and they finally rebuilt the rest of the town in the valley. We stopped at the church as people were going in and Marj asked where we could find the old cemeteries. A nice couple gave us directions and we went on our way. After tromping through cemeteries for a couple of hours we accidently found a road named for one of her families. At the top was an old house from the late 1700s. I was sure that her ancestors had lived there and I had to practically push her out of the car to ask. Who should answer the door but the nice people from the church. They confirmed that it was a house built for one of the daughters of the original land owner. They ended up giving us a tour of the house and fixing us lunch. They showed us a board in the kitchen ceiling that had "Cram 1782" hacked on it with a hatchet. This was in the "new" part of the house. The old part was just two rooms and was much older. The kind man even drove over hill and dale and borrowed a 3 inch thick history book that was full of Marj's ancestors. That was one very exciting day!

    3. Sharon.. That's a great story. I remember when I was looking for the Plumley cemetery in Lincoln Co. 3. Joel, Sorry to bother you again. I know you must be innundated with requests, but I am still asea in trying to connect the David Workman in the 1860 McDowell census to our original southern WV Workman families. After revisiting the records considering your suggestions, I still seem to missing something. Robert Workman, s/o Thomas and Sarah (Deskins) Workman, according to my information, was born about 1816. A Robert Workman, b. about 1816 was listed in Boone County in 1850 with wife Jane, but no Andrew or David. The crux seems to arise around the Polly Workman in Mercer County in 1850. She was listed as 36 years old and with children: David (12), John, Robert, Henry, James (4) and Andrew (1). (Her David seems to be a little off, but can't be discounted.) Who was that woman? Can we find who her husband was? I haven't checked earlier Mercer census, death or marriage records. I'll do that on my next visit uptown SLC. STAN Joel wrote: I have David and Andrew Workman as s/o Robert and Mary Workman. Andrew Workman m. Ellen Bell February 2, 1870 in Wyoming County, West Virginia. I believe Ellen is the d/o Benjamin and Louisa (Steele) Bell. Robert Workman s/o Thomas and Sarah L. (Deskins) Workman. I have no positive proof of this as Robert Workman died about 1850.

    2. Hello - One of my notorious Stewart great-grand aunts, Ida Mae, married a Bud Dolin ca. 1880s. He was either her first or second marriage - she divorced once- the other husband's last name was Gay. It is my understanding that Mary Ann Stewart married William Mournen. I have yet to make it to the Boone Co. courthouse to check on this and other questions. Mary Ann changed the two daughters names to Stewart after William died. As adults the two Mournen daughters by Mary Ann went back to the name Mournen before marrying. I have heard William Mournen came from Bedford Co. originally. 3. To all interested, If your ancestor, relative was a veteran, and even during the Civil War (Union), and Spanish American War veteran (Pre WWI Era), they are eligible for a government issue marker/replacement marker, if the one you find on their grave is in disrepair, or none placed. Documentation is required, as well as, photographs of the gravesite w/original marker are needed to be submitted with the request form. I followed the necessary steps to reorder a new marker for my grandfather b. 1886, d. 1969, a WW I Veteran, buried in the Highland Memory Gardens at Godby, Logan, WV. The cemetery took a while to enstall the new marker, but finally I badgered them enough to have the new one put on. The original had an incorrect death year-- 1919. No cost....... All the information is on the website: http://www.cem.va.gov/hm.htm Goodluck, Sandi --- LEHJDH211@aol.com wrote: > could you give a little more info on the grave > markers, such as cost and how > to go about getting them? 2. It would be a good idea to talk to the cemetery owners first about any additions to the present grave markers. In WV the engraved markers cost about $140. up. Which is cheap compared to a replacement marker. They can be bought at most monument companys.I have three old markers I want to update,so future generations can know all about their ancestors time on earth. 2. could you give a little more info on the grave markers, such as cost and how to go about getting them? I live in NV and there are a couple headstones that I would love to be able to put something at in order to read them. I had thought of a small metal plaque with everything engraved on it and attached to the original headstone, kind of like a name plate or something but I'm not familiar with what can be placed on or near a headstone and what is not allowed. Any help would be appreciated. Lora

    1. Nathaniel Mullins
    2. Hello - There has been a discussion on the Mullins list re: Nathaniel Mullins - ours and others. The basic premise used to state that our Logan Co. ancestor Nathaniel was the son of a Nathaniel Mullins is based on the signature on the marriage bond being Nathaniel Mullins. The elder Nathaniel Mullins, supposed father of our Nathaniel, was illiterate and could not sign his name. Who signed the marriage bond in 1807 in Rowan Co., NC? Would it have been our Nathaniel himself, age 21?? Rick Below is info on the elder Nathaniel Mullins' illiteracy: Back in North Carolina in Franklin County (formerly Bute) John MULLINS wrote his will. This was April 9, 1784. He signed his will and it was witnessed by two people: John Cooley (who could write) and Nathan Mullins who could not and signed with an "X". It is my belief, and others, that John had 5 brothers: Thomas, Jeremiah, Clement, Nathaniel & Malone. In that same year of 1784, I believe Thomas, Clement and Nathaniel (along with others) arrived in Georgia. Jeremiah is not mentioned in Georgia until 1791-1794 time period. John is the only brother that remained in NC. Nathaniel does not appear in Georgia until he is taxed in 1802 in Hancock County. In 1811 he is witness to a deed transfer where he also signed with an "X". About 1818 he, along with his brother Clement, move to Mississippi. I have much more on this Nathaniel if anyone wants it, but I have no doubt that he could not write.
