    2. gracie
    3. I was touched by how many of the surnames in my tree program were in the Droopy Mountain Civil War list. Since I have a long way to go for my tree, I don't know if they are direct line or not. I just figure that they were cousins of some sort cause even if I don't find them in WV, I find a connection futher west, usually in Illinois/Missouri. For those who want to do something positive about the MTR and coal mining in general, go here. Sign thepetition on this page about MTR. http://westvirginia.sierraclub.org/ Shelby, I think Aultz was probably in Kanawha Co. But not for sure and MapQuest doesn't know either. lol What little I did find was listed under the surname, Aultz, in someone's genealogy research. Or some court fight about wages. Gracie

    3. Shelby, There was a town/settlement in Kanawha County, that I believe is now a part of Charleston, that was once called Aultz. Not sure if it is the same one or not but it is the only one I have been able to find in my Civil War Books. 1. mining
    2. I will hush after this post. The coal - producing Appalachian Cos. in WVA, VA, KY, TN get next to no support from their state governments and especially no assistance from the federal government. This has been the case since mining began. The coal companies and the government care nothing about the destruction of our environment and culture. They care even less about the safety of the miners. What came of Sago and Melville? Are they constructing safe rooms in the underground mines? Are the miners carrying more oxygen now? Will people unite to pressure the powers that be to stop MTR? Rick

    3. Sheryl, one thing that I don't think was mentioned on the Grist mailing is what is done with all the rocks and dirt that are left after the companies take all the coal off the mountains. They dump it into the river/streams/creeks below the mountain. Join www.americanrivers.org As for the way the coal companies treat their workers, write/e-mail congress, senate, the president and let them know how angry/upset you are about this evil. Tell them to MAKE the coal companies follow the rules that have been in effect for years. Only law officers and soldiers should expect to die at their job. Ok, going for another walk, later Gracie ----- Original Message ----- From: <SAMW6@aol.com> To: <WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2006 7:58 PM Subject: Re: [WVLOGAN] MTR Mining > What exactly can someone do that lives out of state? I know that the MTR "mining" is in Logan, Boone, Kanawha, and Mercer Cos. Where else are they doing it? Is it being done in the northern WVa coal counties like Marion, Monongalia, Upshur, and others? What about Kentucky? Did you all read about the mining in Canada - safe rooms, etc. And what about the oxygen supply? Has the legislature done anything to require miners to be equipped with more oxygen? I saw my first black lung sickness and death as a young child. 3. Rick, Thanks for sharing this event. I would love to attend to learn about my great great grandfather James Workman's (m. Rebecca Chambers) activities during the CW. We just might be able to plan a genealogy research trip in the fall around this time! I have contacted Steve Cunningham and requested to receive the newsletter. I might also add that I met Terry Lowry at the WV Archives in the Cultural Center in Charleston a few years ago. He is a very friendly and interesting person, so I know that his presentation will be very good. I purchased a couple of his books about my Confederate ancestors when at Gettysburg a few years ago, but I have not seen "Last Sleep: The Battle of Droop Mountain." I have shared a family Civil War letter and a photo with him for possible inclusion in a future book, so am sure he'd love to have anything anyone would like to share. 3. Hi, Rick Yes, this same thing is being done in the surrounding states but not to the extent that it is in Wv. The laws are a little better in Ky (not much but a little better inforced). The regulations are on the books to stop a lot of the deaths but the companies get away with ignoring them for some reason. Especially in Wv. My Okla redneck attitude says, "get out there and kick some coal company axxxs" but the West Virginian's have already done that and too many died trying. And things don't seem to have changed. At least the little horses are not being used down in the mines. They have gotten better treatment than the miners. This is such a shameful situation. I have sent this through before but think it bears repeating. http://www.grist.org/advice/books/2006/02/16/moore/ Be sure to click on the "related stories" in the little blue box The best (safest) way to fight nowadays is in the voting booth. Ok, took a little walk so that my post won't look like a cross word puzzle without the O's. As I understand it, the machines (that scoop up all the mess that is left after blasting away the tops of the mountains) is now in Australia doing the same thing there. Gracie PS, the moderator of a genie chat room that I go to, well, her mother died recently of BL and she now lives in Okla. The way I understand it, her mother got it because her husband worked in a coal mine. All these laws and regulations for cigaretts but do not a XXXX thing to the coal companies. Off for another walk. Will type at ya'll later on. ----- Original Message ----- From: <rcs5@bellsouth.net> To: <WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2006 1:06 PM Subject: [WVLOGAN] Mining > I sure do agree with what you all have said about mining and Logan Co.
