George Smith is listed in the Boone census as the husband of Nancy Browning I believe; so that complicates matters worse for researchers.Aaaah, those Smiths ! Cousin Shelby
I have been trying to research my gggg grandfather George Smith. He was in Logan Co. prior to 1830. I do not know where he came from originally nor do I know his parents or wife. In 1850 George's wife is not listed on the census. Also, someone said that they have a marriage certificate for one of his children that does not list her mother's name. I have to wonder what happened to her? I descend through their son William Smith. I am posting what is on the 1850 census for George Smith: Dwelling # 283 George Smith 44 M Farmer $115 VA George Smith 20 M VA James Smith 18 M VA Lucy Smith 14 F VA Louisa Smith 13 F VA Sarah J. Smith 12 F VA My William Smith had already married Rhoda Toler by 1850. So the known children of George Sr. are William, George, James, Lucy, Louisa, and Sarah J. Are any of you descended from one of the above children? If so, do you have any documents with the parents' names listed - looking for the mystery wife. My thanks. Rick
You are welcome,Jane. When I was employed at the salt mine I had co workers from Pa, Ky, Wv. So it was almost like being back home again in Logan county WV mines. I hated to leave them, but my old factory recalled me, and I couldnt give up all my seniorty rights. So I said bye with a lump in my throat, and a tear or two. My foreman was from Harlan county, Ky mines, and he told me to not bother with the employment officeif I returmed; He said he would put me to work without their orders. Great bunch of miners there. Shelby
Shelby, Thanks for the information. I don't get to the flats very often. We did go to the Flat Iron Cafe Oldest Irish Pub in the Flats on Center Street in April. Other than that I had been to the flats in at least 15 years. Jane
Jane; Whiskey Island is located at the mouth of the Cuyahoga river The streets in the river flats will take you there.A guard will greet you and ask your business. Its up to him I suppose if visits are allowed.. Shelby
Shelby, Where exactly is Whiskey Island? I have heard of it but never knew where it was. Can people still visit it? Jane
Peggy; Whiskey Island wasnt really an island, but a penensula of land jutting out into Lake Erie. It gots its name in prohibition days, when the Ca.nadian whiskey was smuggled into the USA. and hidden there. Shelby
Shelby- I remember going to Whiskey Island as a child. There were several hills of salt my brothers and I used to check out closely. - Peggy
Jane; The salt mine is located on Whiskey Island near downtown Cleveland.Another salt mine is located at Painesville, about 30 miles east of Cleveland. It was owned by the Morton people. Also, a blue shale mine is in Valley View. The shale is used in aquariums, pool tables, etc. Cleveland was called the best location in the nation back then, for a good reason. If one got laid off at a factory, he could work the mines !! Shelby
Shelby, I have heard all my life that there was salt mining under Lake Erie. Where in the world is it??? I live in Lorain, OH... Jane H.

Hello Max; I worked in the International salt mine here in Cleveland,Oh. It was 2100 feet under Lake Erie. That long elevator ride was the scariest thing I ever faced. The mine itself was very safe. The rooms averaged 36 feet in height and no roof supports were needed. So I had experience as a coal miner, and a salt miner. Cuz; Shelby
Hello I worked for National Mines Service Company for 18 years before they were sold and moved from Ashland Ky. We built a lot of underground equipment for coal mines. The equipment for Canada mines were for Potash Mines they were diesel shuttle cars or the 3 or 4 Rotors Marietta Miners. The 4 Rotor would mine 17 tons of Potash in 1 minute. These mines are very large in size once something would go down it would stay there. Knowing that we never built equipment for coal mines in Canada I checked it out there is only 4 underground coal mines in Canada, two of them are on Cape Breton Island under the sea at 1000 meters below sea level. They use a lot of Longwall shears. They drill holes in the roof's of the mines and extract methane gas to make it safe. Canada does produce a lot of coal by strip mining a pit mining. Max Cartwright
Rooster fighting was a big sport in the last century; big money bets were made on the birds; one night the state troopers made a raid on Godby Branch, and was in the process of arresting the betters; some one said:" arent you going to arrest Cush Brown ? He was a midget; a cop said " no, hes too young to bet".the man replied:" ill bet hes old as you are". Poor Cush went to jail too Shelby.

Oh, please don't hush, Rick! If it weren't for this list, I would have never learned so much about this MTR evilness. You see, I have never lived in WVa, but my dad was born and raised there. He is buried in Logan County, and I'm hearing things from certain relatives that the mining companies want to come in to the area where he is buried, as our dozens of my family members have been buried there for over 150 years (Hoover Fork of Harts Creek). It has been speculated (and I HOPE it is only speculation) that the cemetery may have to be moved. Outrageous. I hope this subject does not offend anyone as being off-topic, as I find it very ON TOPIC for a genealogy list. I'm off now to check out the website that Gracie sent, and I'm composing my letter now to Gov. Manchin. I tear up whenever I think of that beautiful state being raped by these coal companies. Stepping off my soapbox now, Sheryl in Michigan
Thanks, Sharon; You could be correct on Aultz,Va.
I did an AOL search enhanced by Google for Aultz, VA and came up with EDENS for an enlistee from Aultz, which seems to have been located in Kanawha County near Sissonville, WV. Many of what were once important settlements sort of dissolved and became part of another post office or city address. I noticed there were many men with the AULTZ surname who were listed in this search and it seems they nearly all came from the Sissonville area. I hope this helps. Sharon in Florida
Thanks, Sheila; I am thinking that Aultz was located between Charleston and Parkersburg, as many northern WV men enlisted there in the Am. civil war. On my Grandfather John Wilson Burgess war record a mention of him getting a cash advance to visit Parkersburg was entered. Also mentioned was the fact he took excelent care of his horse. Shelby
