Gracie, I saved the info and if I can get to the library I will get copies and send them to you. It is very helpful. I'm not sure you can print the actual records on line. Will let you know when I go. Bonnie

Thank you, Shelby. I came in on the middle of something. I thought Matilda was the daughter of Matthew Farley. Meredith and Matilda were my gggg grandparents. We still don't have the mother of Fernandus Burgess' wife Mary Ann McNeely, do we? We thought she was an Elkins but others say not, if I recall. Click here: Google Earth - Home I ran across this site in PC World's magazine today and checked it out. It's a free download and once you have it downloaded and installed, just type in an area and the image will zoom in on it. One of it's best features I think is it actually showed cemeteries and you can click on them and get directions. When you type in a location name just select all the boxes of things to look for in that area. In my first try I did Branchland, WV and was shown all the stores, churches, cemeteries, schools, etc., in the area. This is a great tool if your not sure where a church or cemetery is located. So far, all that I have seen were named. Lora

From what I can find out, Henry and Capt. Matthew Farley were half brothers; same father, but different mothers. This was in Virginia And The Virginians book. I have no documentation on Matilda; only that she was the dau. of Henry Farley in census records. So all we Logan county Farleys are cousins ! Shelby
Shelby, Not sure if I will join or not. The closest chapter to me is in Charleston and so it is doubtful that I would attend any meetings. I think just knowing that I can prove that I have ancestors who were patriots is all I need. Anita
Shelby, There is nothing modern about Thurmond. During the coal boom it was a hoping town but now I believe there are only 4 families who live there. There is no longer a post office. Only 4 of those locking mail boxes on a pole. But it is a wonderful place to walk around. On the river bank past the town are cabins where people stay in the summer. A friend of mine and her husband has chosen to remodel their cabin and live there year round. It is so peaceful there. Parts of Matewan was filmed at Glen Jean which is another very small town before you get to Thurmond. The parts that showed the old bank and a couple of other parts. I remember they brought loads of dirt in to cover the streets. The old Glen Jean Bank now houses some of the offices for the National Park Service. Anita
Hawk's Nest is a beautiful, wonderful piece of Fayette County. For a state park, it figures on the small side but the scenery is grand and lucky me lives 15-20 minutes away depending on which way around the mountain I am in the mood to travel at the time. Anita PS I live just about a mile from the New River Gorge Bridge, too.

I assumed they had to be related as I've seen their names together. I haven't seen the book Virgina and The Virginans--do you have the name of the author? Also, would you please tell me what census you have that has Matilda listed as Henry's daughter? I haven't been able to find that either, but guess I wouldn't since I've read that Henry died near Louisville, KY, in 1833. I've not been able to find any record of the Farleys at the KY State Archives. I've also seen that some believe he died in Logan Co. This line must be difficult to document as I haven't been able to find anyone who has joined DAR through the Farleys. A lot is written about them and their involvement, but I was at DAR headquarters a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn't find them in their system. I do have copies of pages from different books about them in the Virginia Militia, etc. Any help you could give me would greatly be appreciated. Don't forget about what used to be Grandview State Park and is now part of the New River National Recreational Park. The movie,Matewan, was filmed at Thurmond, near Hawks Nest. It seems the original town of Matewan was a bit too modern for the mining story,so Thurmond was chosen instead.Graffita is nothing modern; back in the 1920s the RJ Reynolds tobbacco co. had a huge sign painted on the Hawks nest cliff RJR. I bet your daughter knows that she can submit DAR supplemental applications to honor your ancestors--lots of women do that so they won't offend a family! She's proud of yours, I'm sure. Is your Mathew Farley related to Henry Farley? I can't seem to find any connection with a Matilda Farley, who married Carter Clark, with Henry Farley. So many say that Henry is Matilda's father, but I haven't been able to find any documents to proved that. Do you know of any?
