    1. Re: [WVLOGAN] For Shelby & Other "Youngins" Fat Man
    2. Brenda Sampsel
    3. Dodie, I remember one that my aunt told that sounds similar to the man with the big head. It was called "Oh, Fat Man, Oh Fat Man What Did You Eat?' [He ate the whole family, except for the baby. When he tried to eat the baby, the baby climbed a tree, Fat Man followed, fell, burst open and all the family popped out hollering "I'm Free!"] The Appal Shop recorded a version back in the eighties. She also told one about Johnnie who was sent to the store to get some salt and instructed not to cut through the graveyard. He did, of course, and was followed home by a haint that finally got him. This one goes, told with suspense, "Johnnie, one step I'm at the gate, the door and so on"..... until it culminates with a big "GOTCHA!". Sorry I haven't been in touch for awhile, old friend. I have a new job that has been really taking up a bunch of time! 3. I just remembered another pseudo-threat of my mother's. It usually accompanied the one about the bloody arm. I don't know how I could have forgotten it because it would always send squealing and laughing kids scattering. "If I catch any of you doing that again I'm going to cut your ears off with a rusty butcher knife!" If we really did anything serious we got the backside of her hair brush on our backsides. Makes you wonder how many centuries some of these old sayings go back in history. Mama's grandma was from Ireland but I can't imagine that sweet old lady saying anything like that, either. ;o)

    1. Adam(s) Clendenin proved for DAR
    2. Many of us are Clendenin descendants. Adam is the patriarch of the bunch and a deed has now proven his children well enough for DAR. He is my ancestor both through Mary H."Polly" (of course) Clendenin and also her brother, Robert, whose son, John, fathered Ancel Clendenin who married Adaline McNeeley who was Mary "Polly's daughter. This one had me puzzled for a long time, due to the mistake the Mr. Olaffson made on the Boone annotated Censuses. Ancel and Adaline were second cousins. They went off to Cass County, MI with other Clendenen and Hinchman families, but returned to the hills and went on to have a big family. One of their sons, Isaiah Clendenin, married Margaret Ann Victoria Fillinger and their daughter, Mary Alice Clendenin, married Calvary Gunnoe. They are my great-grandparents. Mary Alice died relatively young when her son, Cyril, was born, and the Clendenins buried her in Drawdy Cemetery. Isaiah and Victoria were later buried with her. Calvary lies in a plot lower down the hill, with his two sons killed in the Nellis mine explosion in 1943, and many of his other children. The story is that the Clendenins thought they were better than the Gunnoes! Anyway, since DAR was a topic, I thought some of the rest of you may be interested in knowing that you now record your Clendenin ancestry back to Adam. Adam's father is Charles Clendenin, and Charles's father is William Glendenning, which was the proper name when they immigated. Some still have this name. One of the recent governors of Maryland was Glendenning. I have also seen Glendenin, Clendenen, and other variations of this surname. Sharon Lee Gates Apopka, FL

One of the stories was "Rawhead And Bloody Bones". I can't remember the plot, but seems like RHABB lived in an attic? (Maybe murdered in an attic? But I may have it confused with another story?) I tried to "Google" it but coudn't find the actual story. It appears that there were different versions- mostly a monster living in a swamp. Some say the story was Gaelic, some say Celtic, some say English (Lancashire and Yorkshire) and some say that slaves brought the story from Africa. The Oxford English Dictionary dates the name Rawhead And Bloody Bones back as far as circa1550. > > > > Does anyone remember your parents or grandparents telling you the story called "Rawhead And Bloody Bones"? 2. Not exactly a story , but this spurred a childhood memory for me of an unusual custom some of the adults in our little "town" of 200 people( Blair) participated in every Halloween. Many would buy( in Logan) sarcastic, caricature type cards/ valentines carefully choosing the negative caption to make a point to their chosen recipient. I guess this was a way of expressing their gripes with each other. I remember my mom opening one and laughing about it. Although these "valentines" were negative, usually everyone laughed and took it in stride. Needless to say they had to be bought and mailed in Logan so the postmistress( Aileen Linville), wouldn't tell who sent what to whom.Does anyone remember these valentines? Gail
