Gail and other list members, This letter really got to me. Your description and your feelings are very real. Please send this letter to Gov. Manchin. Here is his e-mail address. Governor@WVGov.org I was tempted to just forward it myself, but I think it is Gail's decision to send it. I sent him my own e-mail asking him to speak up for those who were afraid of the Coal Barons, and to put an end to the destruction. Thanks for your insight Gail. Through your eyes and skill at putting your observations into words, I am sure you have empowered others to take some action. It's crazy, it's totally insane. They have already blasted all around the cemetery, bought and burned my parent's home and my mamaw's and papaw's houses as well.Much of the terrain of our little town, the railroad, the creek, the hollers are all completely defaced, houses of course are all gone and our lower end of Blair( Midway) is unrecognizable. Dear Logan County Genealogist, White Oak Cemetery is one of the special places on earth for me! Several hundred of my cousins are buried there. My great grand parents Hiram Mullins and Jane Riggins lie there. This entire discussion ticks me off and brings tears to my eyes. Can someone please take a picture of the blasting that has been done around the White Oak Cemetery? thanks Jim Burgess -----Original Message----- From: Evelyn Sukey [mailto:elsukey@glwb.net] Sent: Friday, August 11, 2006 6:08 AM To: WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [WVLOGAN] Cemetery vandalism and code Gail and other list members, This letter really got to me. My Ggrandparents lived in Yolyn and Slagle both of which are gone on Rum Creek. I drove up Rum Creek several years ago, to the top of the mountain where the Lowe cemetery is, then back down into Amherstdale. Rum Creek was a very lonely place. You could tell where houses used to be but are gone. DNA's been a boon to genealogy and >>just think how great if all the Vance men would take 37 marker tests .<< How about descendants of James Vance, too? He was the son of Abner and Barbara. There are some living direct-descent Vance men in Labette Co., Kansas. Is anyone here in contact with them or any other direct descendants of James Vance that you know of? With the lack of actual documentation this is the only way to get back into the 1700's with certainty of ancestor. Carole
Max, do you know if they are going to move the Robinette cemetery or just shove it down the mountain with the refuse from the road? Ada, thank you from the bottom of my heart. What really gets to me about this situation is that most of the MTR workers probably have ancestors in these cemeteries, whether they know it or not. I sent e-mails to more than just the governor, no response yet. Btw, I posted the Grist url on the Blankenship mailing list also. And got very positive answers. I am still a little, well, scared to make these posts since the problem over the cemetery in Tx. last year. I want to thank all the Logan list members for all the support with this issue. And the moderator for allowing me to do this here. I still think that cemeteries are a part of genealogy. Gracie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ada G. I wish to commend and congratulate Phyllis Kirk and her Harts High 2006 Project for their recent schoolastic award....She and several of her students were on the front page of the Logan Banner, pictured with the WV First Lady. Quite a prestigious award. Keep up the great work! More educators should enstill within the youth to take an interest in their community, their heritage, their ancestors, and where the cemeteries are. Thanks to your students hard work, I have located many ancestors' and other familial relations burial sites. Otherwise, I would have never found them. Thanks so much! For those you who don't live in WV you probably don't know this, but Gov. Joe Manchin and Don Blankenship, the CEO of Massey are far from being friends. I also know that Cecil Roberts would like to put it to Massey Energy as well. With a name like Blankenship, doesn't it make you wonder if his roots lie deep in the heart of Logan County? Anita
Our ancestors property was sold for taxes about 40 years ago before I or any of my generation had anything to do with it and we weren't aware that it was for sale this time until this gentleman bought it. We knew that the property was there but I was not aware that there was a cemetery on it until a couple of years ago. That property sat abandoned for nearly fifty years and there are no roads in or out making the cemetery very nearly inaccessible and right now, I have been told that it is overrun with rattlesnakes and so the search will have to wait until cooler weather. Anita
Believe me; it hasnt been easy fighting the coal barons in WV.My late wife Norma has relatives employed by them, so I have to shake hands with one hand, and swat Masse & Arch coal cos with the other hand. You really have to watch your tongue in WV. I ask one Mingo county man what he thought of the devastation going on. His reply:"it dont bother me none". Later his water well was ruined by the blasting. So it affects people more than they know ! Someone in the know, please post a list of addresses for the governor and whoever else we can start a writing campaign to stop MTR and the destruction of cemeteries. If there's a grass-roots organization founded, put them on the list, so we can join. I would think each county genealogical society should take it upon themself to determine from a list of their county cemeteries, which ones are protected under the Historic Preservation Act and which ones are not. It's a simple chart: Name/Yes/No. Post it, sit back and listen to us scream. This is the dust of our ancestors. I know I'm in another state and my vote doesn't count in WV, but my tourism dollars darn sure do, and my mouth and letters against the state of West Virginia do to folks I normally tell how gorgeous it is, vacation there, go skiing, hike, see the leaves and the springs. You don't fight big business with money. You fight it with publicity and pressure from higher up. I can't think of anything else to do but write, email, complain, write letters to the newspapers, and those living there, keep taking pictures for us and posting them. So the big-wigs have heard it before. Stamps don't cost that much, nor emails. The alternative is to sit back and wait until WV becomes another Grand Canyon, minus the guysers. Dear Logan County Genealogist, When I visited the Toler Brown Cemetery at Cyclone in 2005 on the Logan County Wyoming Cemetery line, I could not get to the cemetery. There were two large roads on either side of the cemetery - there were huge mountains of dirt around the cemetery. I could not tell if the Cemtery was in tact or not. I was really upset. Just too old to climb the dirt pile and tromp through the weeds. Wish I was 25 again! Just in case we have someone new on the Logan County list - we are working on a Toler family history and have a Toler DNA project going - We are looking for Toler Men to submite their DNA to our project. The book is titled Toler Families of Southwest Virginia Descendants of David Toler and Suzanna The book is going to be 800-900 pages in length with pictures. If you are related to the Toler and have not contacted me please do so. thanks Jim Burgess -----Original Message----- From: gracie [mailto:g.winters@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Wednesday, August 09, 2006 8:21 PM To: WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WVLOGAN] MTR http://www.wv.gov/sec.aspx?pgID=49 ----- Original Message ----- From: "suebod" <suebod@tampabay.rr.com> To: <WVLOGAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 09, 2006 10:01 PM Subject: [WVLOGAN] MTR > Someone in the know, please post a list of addresses for the governor and > whoever else we can start a writing campaign to stop MTR and the > destruction of cemeteries. > > If there's a grass-roots organization founded, put them on the list, so we > can join. > > I would think each county genealogical society should take it upon themself > to determine from a list of their county cemeteries, which ones are > protected under the Historic Preservation Act and which ones are not.
