Your ancestor William Lucas b. abt 1824, was the brother of my ggg grandfather David Price Lucas b. abt. 1814; they being the children of John "The Preacher" Lucas and Mary Polly Fry. Your William Lucas married Emily Fry d/o John Fry and Catherine Snodgrass; John Fry being a sibling to Mary Polly Fry. John Fry and Catherine Snodgrass were also the parents of Baptist 'Nab' Fry, father of Victoria Fry b. abt. 1864, who married William R. Lucas b. abt. 1852, son of David Price Lucas and Amanda Blaine (per one death certificate). William R. Lucas and Victoria Fry are my gg grandparents, through their oldest son Willis W. Lucas b. 1886. Willis married Luranie Vance, d/o John Washington Vance b. abt. 1852 and Cynthia Theodocia "Doshie" Lewis ....Willis, Luranie, John and Doshie are buried within the MAYNARD FAMILY CEMETERY on Sand Creek Rd., Atenville, Lincoln Co., WV. Grandmaw Vicky Fry Lucas was a sister to Eliza Fry Thompson who married Albert Jenkins Thompson...they resided up Whitman, Holden, Logan, WV and there is a photo of this couple within the FRY Family Genealogy book, and possibly one inside of one of the two "Logan County Pictorial" books, or I may have seen it published in an issue of the LOGAN BANNER. This couple is infront of what is believed to be their home; Eliza is sitting and her husband is standing to her left with his hand resting on her shoulder. It looks to be circa 1890's. The LUCAS' and FRY's have deep family ties going back many generations. Would love to hear if you have any old photos, too. Shelby, They would bring the babies that had Thrush to my mom and she would blow in their mouth also because she was born after her father died and never did see him and it always cured them too. It hasn't been that long ago that a cousin brought their baby to her because it had Thrush and the doctor's could not get it cleared up but after she breathed into the babies mouth a few days later the Thrush left. Dodie, If by chance, you do find a picture of the school house at Coal Branch would you send me a copy? My husband James and his brothers and sisters went to the Coal Branch School and then they went to the school at Mt. Gay. I told James, Fannie and Pauline about this e-mail and they know John, Paul, Alfred, Elam and Joe that was mentioned. I couldn't think of your maiden name so I didn't mention you. I met you at a get-together of the Logan list years ago at Shoneys. I have a sis-in-law Mary Kirk that lived on City View Hill. (She married my brother, Darrell) Pauline Miller Ward said she had Mrs. Fortner and Mr. Bias as teachers. Fannie Miller Moore married my brother a year after I married hers. Stan and Joel, Thanks for the information. Jim Burgess -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of STANLEY BROWNING Sent: Wednesday, October 03, 2007 10:54 PM To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WVLOGAN] J Thornton Workman family help - Jim Burgess Hi Jim, Joel has already answered your question, but I thought you might be interested in what we had to say about Shanton Raymond Workman in the book: TRACKING THE PIONEERS III. There is more on this family starting on page 177. Their's is quite an interesting story. STAN Shanton Raymond Workman, son of Joseph Workman (Jr.) and Elizabeth Reed was born about 1830 in Virginia.[1] He married Sarilda Webb, daughter of George Webb and Elizabeth Keller, 2 August 1845[2] in Tazewell County, Virginia.[i] Sarilda was born about 1820 in Tazewell County. She is confirmed to be a daughter of George Webb, Jr. by her being mentioned as such in her fathers will.[ii] Shanton and Sarilda brought their family to Wyoming County, probably just before 1850, when Joseph Workman (Jr) made the move. They lived in Wyoming County until after 1860. Sarilda first filed for divorce in Wyoming County in October 1860; however, they may have had children after that date. In 1870, they were living apart and Sarilda ("Ceril")[3] and her children were in Braxton County. There is no indication that Shanton purchased property in Wyoming County; however, records show that on two occasions he and other family members were involved in selling what appears to have been a part of Joseph Workman (Jr)'s estate on Slab Fork of Big Fork of the Guyandotte.[iii] R. Workman et. al., sold mineral rights on 86 acres on Guyandotte River to William A. French in 1882. Some children of Shanton and Serilda moved to Washington state and others lived in Lewis County, and Clay County, West Virginia. Sarilda (Webb) Workman never remarried. She became a notable figure in Lewis County, West Virginia, where she and her children imigrated from Braxton County. According to family lore, she was a midwife and, to some old timers, a country doctor. Her death was recorded 1 February 1899 in a local paper, titled Weston World. The notice placed her death on Friday 17 January 1899 and her burial at the Skinner Cemetery at Orlando[4] in Lewis County. Shanton Workman married Dulcena "Ceny" Roberts, born about 1840 in Pike County, Kentucky, 28 July 1873 in Wyoming County.[5] He and Dulcina were documented in Greenbriar County in 1880. It could appear, based solely on the recorded dates, that Shanton and Sarilda's children had been split up and six of the oldest children were living with their mother, Sarilda (Razilda), in Lewis County, West Virginia, while four of the younger ones were with Shanton and Ceny in Greenbriar County. With that line of reasoning, Dulcena and Shanton, by that time, had three children of their own. However, the more logical explanation is that Shanton and Dulcinia had children before he and Grizilda were divorced and he and Dulcenia were married. Presumeably, the older children had already left home. Dulcena, age 60, and her daughter Armeda, were living with her daughter, Rebecca, and son-in-law, Miles Workman, in Greenbriar County in 1900. Rebecca and Miles may have been first cousins.[6] The census records indicate that Shanton and Sarilda (Webb) Workman had twelve children. However, it can be seen that two of their children were born before their parents were married. Also, Shanton was much too young to be starting a family. The conclusion is that Sarilda had had a previous relationship and had at least two children before she and Shelton were married. Records show that Shanton and Dulcena had eleven children.[iv] [1] Birth dates for Shanton and Sarilda were derived from 1850 Wyoming County census records. Some marriage information from Sayre plus from an Internet post by Kristol Moore, 1 November 2001. Sayre gives Shantons birth date as 1818. [2] The actual marriage probably took place about 1840, but was not recorded ontil 1845. [3] It is sometimes better to search for information on this family by focusing on the children because the parents are not always recognized owing to the various ways their names are written and the fact that they each moved around a lot. Sarilda may also be written as Surilda, Ciril or Arzilla, and Shanton as Shendon, Shendel, Raymond, S.R. or R.S. [4] Orlando was known earlier as Confluence and was located near the Braxton-Lewis County line. [5] Dulcena previously was married to Michale T. Ford on 31 August 1863 in Wyoming County, West Virginia. [6] Rebecca, daughter of Sarilda Webb, may have been a daughter of Shanton Workman, but it is unlikely. Miles was a son of Shanton's brother, William Washington Workman. [i] Pauline Haga. Tazewell County Marriages. (Crab Orchard, West Virginia: P. Haga 1993) [ii] Pauline Haga. Sandy, Thanks for your help on the Prewit Pruitt family. Jim Burgess -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Sandi Sent: Monday, October 01, 2007 7:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WVLOGAN] Joseph Prewit-- 1860/1870 for Jim Hello Jim, No, I am not a descendant, just someone able to help you by looking them up. I do not know who their parents are, sorry. I will email you the censuses to you privately, but will convey the information within this email for others to have, also. ____________ 1840 Tazewell, VA census (image 29 of 59 Ancestry.com) I find a Joseph Prewitt listed, possibly the one aged between 40-50 yrs of age. There are 4 young males listed between the ages of 5-30; There are 5 young females between the ages of 5-15 years of age and one female aged 20-30 yrs of age. Also, a Reuben Prewitt age between 40-50 yrs in age with six young males: 2 under 5; 1 -5/10; 1 -10/15; 2 -15/20. A female aged 40/50, and two young females, 1 -10/15; 1 -15/20. I have not checked for other PREWITT's within the 1840 census, but this provides proof that there is a possible familial link that there were PREWITTs living within Tazewell, VA that Joseph could be related to. _________________ 1860 (June 26) Tazewell, VA, Eastern District Census.
