Dear Logan County, Virginia genealogist and Burgess descendants, When I received my copy of Logan County West Virginia and Beyond by Joseph Thomas the greatest revelation to me is found on page 604 2. Anthony Lawson II (Anthony) was born October 31, 1785 in Stanton, Northumberland, England. Check out the following Web Site http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/r/e/Clara-Preston-OH/GENE8-0001 .html Philip Preston of Bedford County, Virginia came from Ingestre, Staffordshire, England. Philip Preston's children and grand children married into the Burgess family. William Burgess and Philip Preston were neighbors in Bedford County, Virginia. Standon and Ingestre look to be just a few miles from each other - no more than 30 miles. I have found a Burgess family from Standon, Staffordshire, England that may be our family. Shelby can you go to England and figure this out? Thanks Jim Burgess
Thanks, Jim; As you already know, your grandfather(Cornelious Burgess), and mine (John Wilson Burgess) enlisted at Brownstown(Marmet) in the 7th WV cavalry. Im wondering why they didnt enlist at Mud River, or Peytona, which would have involved less travel. Granpa JW got a medal for his service. I never saw it; but my dad said so. Probably went to James Lewis Burgess, his oldest son. They were both in company I. As you know, the company was involved in the Battle Of Droop Mountain.Pocahontas co. It was the bloodiest battle in WV history.About 150 lives were lost that day. Cuz; Shelby ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
I have the metal medallion of my grand father Cornelius Burgess - it is one of my precious earthly possessions. His name is engraved on the side of the coin Good question - on Mud River or Peytona? I have no idea. Maybe we can figure it out. I want to add their information to Logan county recreated. Shelby, Yes he was probably in the 4th Regiment Virginia Infantry (Mounted). I have it as the 4th West Virginia Calvary. Yes it is confusing. He was also in the 187th Militia. Here is a transcribed letter from Robert Hager that talks about Gomery. Joel The following is a copy of a letter written by Robert Hager, when he was a member of the Legislature, and when the State Capitol was at Wheeling, West Virginia, and was written to his son E. A. Hager: Wheeling, Dec. 15th, 1868 Dear Son: Yours of the 31st was gladly received; It found me well. I was glad to hear from you, and that all was well and doing well. I received a letter from Alfred today; he said much about hunting. I expect the deer will all be killed before I get home. We are getting along fine; I think we will get done the Code by the 20th Inst. If I can know when we will get through, I will write for a horse, if I know in time for a letter to get home in time for them to bring a horse to Brownstown. I don't expect to write but one more letter, and that will be to Gomery, and that will be tomorrow, or next day, as I would get home before a letter wrote after that time. I do not want you to get mad and eat up all the venison before I come home. Tell Nan to take good care of her boy, I expect he will be big enough to plow by spring; then you can hoe the corn and that will save her from that. I will close for the present; it is almost nine o'clock, and is half a mile to the post office. Yours as ever Robert Hager E. A. Shelby, The 7th West Virginia Calvary was formed after Nov 1862 from the 4th West Virginia Infantry which formed from the 8th Regiment Volunteer Infantry. This was after Alfred Allen Hager was commissioned Adjutant of the 187th Militia. The following should explain it. You can also view my file at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hagerj&id=I258154 . He did claim that he served under Lt. Col Russell after his service with the militia but it was not proven at the time of his application. But that was after the Civil War and it is certainly possible that Ronald Turner found some proof. >From Alfred Allen Hager's pension file: 28 Aug 1907: Commissioner of Pensions asked the Adjutant General about AAH duty in W.Va. militia from 1862 to 1865 and about service under Lt. Col. Russell of the 4th W. Va. Inf. The AG returned notice of 8th Regt. Va. Inf. designation change to 8th Regt. Va. Mounted Inf. and finally to 7th Regt. W. Va. Cavalry. Also, that the name of AAH was not found on the rolls of the 4th W. Va. Inf. in which William H. H. Russell was a Lt. Col. Joel "Brief History of the Seventh West Virginia Cavalry Adapted from Loyal West Virginia 1861-1865, by Theodore F. Lang The Eighth Regiment, Virginia Infantry, (of the Union Army) was organized in the Kanawha Valley, by Major John H. Oley, during the fall of 1861, headquarters being at Charleston. The regiment was ordered to New Creek in April, 1862, becoming a part of General Fremont's Mountain Department, and with the Sixtieth Ohio Infantry, was organized as an advance brigade, and placed under the command of Colonel Cluseret, A.D.C. to General Fremont. In the pursuit of Stonewall Jackson up the Shenandoah Valley, this brigade had the advance, and were engaged in several skirmishes with Turner Ashby's cavalry, following him closely to Harrisonburg, where they engaged him, resulting in the death of Ashby. This brigade occupied the center at the Battle of Cross Keys and was complimented by General Fremont for its gallantry. The regiment became a part of General Bohlen's brigade, Sigel's Corps, in General John Pope's campaign, and served with great gallantry in all the engagements of that campaign, including the Second Battle of Bull Run. On arriving at Washington, D.C., the regiment was transferred to General Milroy's brigade, and returned with him to western Virginia, and was again assigned to duty in the Kanawha Valley. In November, 1862, it was transferred to Colonel Moor's brigade. On the assignment of General Averell to the Fourth Separate Brigade, this regiment was mounted, and became a part of his brigade, as the Seventh West Virginia Cavalry, with which it served as long as the organization existed. The regiment spent the last years of its term in the Kanawha Valley, occupying the following different posts: Charleston, Coalsmouth, Winfield, Point Pleasant, and Guyandotte. Early in January two or three brigades of Confederate troops were sent to winter in the counties immediately in the front of these posts, and the regiment was kept very actively engaged during the winter, to prevent incursions by them, and in the protection of loyal citizens and their property. Several small engagements took place, in which a number of the enemy were killed, and about two hundred prisoners taken. About the 1st of February, 1865, six officers and nearly one hundred fifty men were discharged by reason of expiration of term of service, but the regiment was immediately filled to the maximum by the muster-in of recruits. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Sunday, October 07, 2007 9:37 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [WVLOGAN] Logan and Boone Counties Militia Companies in 187thMilitia Hi Joel' Something doesnt sound right about Alfred Allen Hager. Jim, As you know you can find information about the 187th Militia at: http://www.wvculture.org/HISTORY/wvmemory/militia/wvunmil.html I am afraid there is not much more then rosters and enlistment information available online. The enlistment record has the age sometimes which helps in identifying the individual. The website is searchable. Alfred Allen Hager was discharged from the service of the United States 17 Feb 1862 at Wheeling, W.Va. by command of Brig. Gen. Rosecrans in Special Order No. 37 Article 6, after becoming sick with typhoid fever. He served as a Private in Company G, 8th Regiment,(West) Virginia Volunteer Infantry from 24 Oct 1861 to 17 Feb 1862. He was then commissioned by Gov. Pierpont to Adjutant on 2 May 1862 in the W. Va. 187th Militia and served in that capacity until about 1865 when W. Va. military law was repealed. As the Adjutant he was responsible for organizing the Militia in Boone County and it looks like parts of Logan County now. He suffered from rheumatism for the rest of his life due to his illness from Civil War service. I thought he had only served with the 8th West Virginia Infantry which became the 7th West Virginia Calvary until Van Gale sent away for his Civil War pension records. Van has transcribed much of this pension record. I sent a copy of some it to this list back in March 2007. While searching for information about the West Virginia Militia I found Linda Fluharty had a lot of information so I sent her am e-mail asking about records for the 187th Militia as well as what an adjutant's duties were and she provided the following reply: ********************************************* From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, January 02, 2007 7:40 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: Alfred Allen Hager Joel: An adjutant is a staff person who helps a superior officer, often as an administrative assistant. Regarding the 187th militia and the others in West Virginia, the database is on the WV State Archives site. - I have the same on microfilm. Unfortunately, there is very little in the way of records about the militiamen. There is more about the 133rd, which my ancestor served in because about 70 of the men were captured and were marched to Richmond and put in prison camps. 40+ of them died, including my ancestor at Andersonville Prison, GA. That was an unusual case and few others in the militia died. It is my understanding that militia service was part-time, often only a couple/few days a month. Their service involved protecting the community and keeping the guerrillas in check. You could check with the WV Archives and see if they have anything more about the 187th but I would be surprised if they do. Of course, there may be something more in a book about Boone County history. Sorry I don't have more information to impart. Linda Fluharty www.lindapages.com *********************************************** My cousin Van Gale made copies of everything in the 187th Militia folder in the State Archives, which he says was all pretty useless with the exception of a one page letter from Alfred Allen Hager to Governor Pierpont describing his successes and failures at organizing militias in Boone. He gave me a scanned copy of this document which I posted to the Hager Family Website. He also scanned a bill submitted by Robert Hager to the State House of Reps. that allocates funds to a group of people to reimburse them for militia expenses. The list included Alfred and Robert Hager, Adam Toney, and James Bias. They had a militia meeting at the house of "Thomas Copley" who is related to Alfred's later father-in-law Anthony Copley. Van Gale says that Adam Toney is an interesting case, because it looks like he signed up for the 22nd VA (Confederacy), deserted, and joined up with the 187th Boone County Militia. I also posted a copy of this letter to the Hager Family Website. Van Gale says he has an issue of West Virginia History magazine with militia rosters including the 187th, but there's nothing in them that wasn't already in the online rosters. There is a brief article about the 187th in the Boone County West Virginia History 1990, by the Boone County Genealogical Society, Inc. I also understand that Sigfus Olafson and David Anderson Turner have done some research on the Militia and may have published articles and maybe a book. Any information about where to find copies of these publications would be much appreciated. Dear Logan County Genealogist, Can we have a discussion regarding the different Military Units and Soldiers that served from Logan County during the Civil War? Company I 7th West Virginia Company G Logan Wildcats What other Units did we have? Could we have a discussion of these units and the men who served in these units? Maybe we could get one person to take each of these Units and write a brief discussion on the men who served. It would be great to know where they served and in what battles they fought. We could post this information on Logan County USGENWEB and LOGANWV.NET When finished I could post a brief description of each person who served in each unit on Logan County recreated. Are there web sites that discuss these units? Anyone willing to help us with this little project? I am willing to take Company I 7th West Virginia if no one else will take it. I have the Co 7th West Virginia unit information from Reference Book of Wyoming County. Has this been done by a Civil War buff? Is there someone on the list who is willing to head this up? Thanks to Joel Hager for this web site http://www.wvculture.org/HISTORY/wvmemory/militia/wvunmil.html Can someone in West Virginia contact To order copies or obtain further information about the collection, contact Terry Lowry <mailto:[email protected]> at (304) 558-0230. There is a minimum, non-refundable research fee of $15.00 for out-of-state residents and $5.00 for in-state residents. Do we know what kind of records we can get from Logan County? If these records are of value to us I would be willing to contribute money to getting copies. Do we have someone in West Virginia who could check into these records? We need someone who goes to the archives occasionally to check into this! By the way I finished the 1872 Death records yesterday? No very friendly records - information was very sketchy records. I have to say that I was very impressed when it said that they had over 40,961 Logan County death records. A few more than I am willing to extract. We should check this record for the death records of our ancestors. Thanks Jim Burgess

Dear Logan County Family, I have fallen in love with a book titled _The Place Setting: Timeless Tastes of the Mountain South, From Bright Hope to Frog Level_by Fred William Sauceman. Mercer University Press. 2006 I am reading this one right now and can barely put it down. Most of the restaurants reviewed are from Scott County, Virginia where my Wilson family hails. My husband must have been very sick of listening to me laugh and say things such as "I've GOT to own this book!" etc. etc. etc. I love Sauceman's writing style. (He's a city boy, he can't relate!) In looking the title up on OCLC World Cat, I noticed there is a Part 2, recently published (2007). I think I'm ordering both books. For those of you who don't want to buy these books, check them from your local public library. Ada Wilson Kent (researching Wilson, Spence, Duty, Ellis, Music, Cisco) Worthington, OH
