Hi Judi, I, too, was sad to hear of Glenna's passing. Thanks for sharing her obituary. I have some information on her family line. She's a distant cousin of mine on her mother's side. Her father was Zack Browning, born in 1895, the youngest son of Charles Browning (son of James Browning and Rebecca Browning) and Charles Browning's second wife Nellie Williamson. (This Charles Browning was first married to Nancy Ellis, daughter of William Ellis and Amy Browning.) Glenna said that her grandfather Charles Browning was 48 when her father Zack was born, and Zack was 48 when Glenna was born. So she never knew her grandfather Charles. Glenna's mother was Matilda York (married Zack Browning), who was the daughter of Lucinda Evans (married William Kelly York), who was the daughter of Mathias and Nancy Evans. Nancy was the daughter Lewis Dempsey and Matilda Stafford (who was my gr-gr-grandfather John Stafford's sister). Glenna's mother Matilda/Tilda died in 2002. Anita, Amos Workman Amos Workman, son of James Hewett and Ruth (Halstead) Workman, was born about 1820 and married Jemima Walker in 1847. Jemima Walker, daughter of William Walker, Sr. of Boone County, (West) Virginia, was born 1825. Amos and Jemima had four children. Jemima died September 17, 1856, and on March 13, 1858, Amos married Margaret Canterbury in Logan County. They had two children. Amos Workman enlisted in the Union Army October 10, 1861 and served in Company G, 7th West Virginia Cavalry. He died while a prisoner of war at Camp Sherman, Vicksburg, Mississippi. Workman, Amos; Company G, 7th West Virginia Cavalry; enlisted 10 October 1861, Mud River; died in P.O.W. Camp Shannon Vicksburg Mississippi; married Margaret Canterbury 13 March 1858 in Logan County Virginia; children in pension letter were Catherine (1/9/1859) and Rebecca (1/23/1861).[i] The children of Amos and Jemima moved with their grandparents, the William Walker family, to Wyoming County. Several descendants of James Hewett and Ruth (Halstead) Workman were established in Wyoming County by 1860. *2nd Wife of Amos Workman: . +Polly Canterbury b: December 1837 in Logan County, Virginia d: April 14, 1911 in Fayette County, West Virginia ..... 2 Catherine Workman b: January 9, 1859 ..... 2 Rebecca Workman b: January 23, 1861 in Logan County, (W)V d: August 15, 1880 ......... +Millard Filmore Clarke b: January 31, 1857 in Rush Creek, (West) Virginia d: Abt 1885 ............ 3 Charles Hampton Clarke b: August 15, 1880 d: October 9, 1967 in Carroll. Ohio ................ +Edna Fairbelle Lawson b: June 27, 1885 d: April 24, 1941 in Winfield, West Virginia. Notes; (1) Take care in researching Amos Workman. He had a nephew who was about the same age and entered the Civil War on the same day. It is easy to get the two mixed up. This Amos Workman married Mary Elizabeth Skaggs. (2) Mary Jane Workman, daughter of Amos and Jemima, was my great grandmother. If you have specific questions regarding this family, contact me directly. It is impractical for me to do a "data dump" of large files in this forum. (3) You can download my book, TRACKING THE PIONEERS III: A History of Workman Families of Southern West Virginia, from LULU.com free of charge. It is a good source of information on the early families. Never met, as I have really only met Donna Brown in person but so many of you mean so very much to my heart. We are just made this way I suppose. The one you refer to was Mary Jane Workman, daughter of Amos Workman who died during the Civil War. Following is a brief synopsis. Mary Jane Workman was born in Boone County, West Virginia (Virginia), the daughter of Amos and Jemima (Walker) Workman. She was orphaned at an early age; her mother died when Jane was about four years old and her father died while a prisoner of war when Jane was approximately twelve years of age. The 1860 Boone County Federal Census shows Mary Jane and siblings living with their grandfather, William Walker, Sr. On March 29, 1871 in Wyoming County. Wesley Elkins, Jane's brother-in-law, was named guardian of Mary J. and William Workman, under 21 years of age but over 14 years of age. Jane was listed in the household of Wesley Elkins in the 1870 Wyoming County Federal Census. Mary Jane never married her partner, Charles Ferguson Stewart; however, they had nine children. Charles F. provided a house for Jane on his farm at the mouth of Coon branch, near where he and his lawful wife, Parthenia, lived. In later years, this “old homeplace” was modernizd and became the home of the Alonzo Scott family. Jane was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Matheny Chapel for 55 years. The 1880 Federal census records list Mary Jane Workman as the head of a household in Oceana Township, Wyoming County, West Virginia. Also, the census indicates that she and her son, Ash Stewart, were a household in Wyoming County in 1910. As she advanced in age, she lived with various ones of her children at different times. In 1920 and 1930, she was enumerated with the household of her son, Ash P. Stewart. She died at the age of 88 on January 25, 1941, on Coon branch at the home of her daughter, May C. Shumate. Mary Jane Workman was buried in the Stewart Family Cemetery at Matheny, Wyoming County, West Virginia, across the valley from the grave of her long-time partner, Charles Ferguson Stewart. One of the ladies on my prayer chain went to the viewing for Glenna Wilson last evening. Her husband said they only found she has cancer 6 weeks ago. She was not sick long. He said she really enjoyed the Logan research list and her work here. They made many trips home and she went to cemetery's and he said her work has been kept in tact. He said how much this list meant to her. They are just in shock it all came so fast. Judi
