I once had a big collection of fossils, I dug out of the coal seams, in WV. They included vegetation : Ferns, other flowers. Also trapped forest animals, such as snakes, chipmunks, lizards, frogs. I suppose this goes along with evolution process,as the decayed vegetation turned into coal over the ages. However, someone had to place the vegetation there to begin with, so we will not omit God, the almighty creator. I have always thought the two went hand in hand. Which reminds me of a story about the preacher & the sinner being partners in loading coal together. The coal was cut & blasted down ; along with the coal was lots of rock that had to be removed by the two. The sinner was swearing while removing the rock, and the preacher said: " Now, now; none of that; the Lord gave us this coal for a livlihood". The sinner looked over at him & said: " I know the Lord gave us the coal for a blessing, BUT, I believe He went to sleep, and the devil put this old rock in the coal" >grin> Shelby ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Judith, Thanks you so much. I, too have had TIAs in the past, but this was a full blown stroke. At the moment I have no feeling in the left side of my face, thumb and index finger of my left hand, and I realize how blessed I was that it wasn't worse. Anita </HTML>
Anita, I did not know this was what it is. I have had TIA's. I have you on my prayer chain and will be a little more specific now. Praying for a full recovery for you. In the early part of the 1900 s, electricity came to the mines in Logan Co. WV. The old Soverign Coal Co. mine at Blair, was partly electrified, with an open live overhead wire called a "trolley wire". It served the purpose of a power source for cutting & drilling coal in the mines working places.Mules were used to haul the coal cars out of the mine.Curtis Reeves was the mule driver. They were ending the shift one day, and the men all loaded into the mine cars for the trip outside. The mule somehow got his ear into the live trolley wire, and he leaped backward into the crowd of miners. It took a while to get them all out from underneath the animal, grin ! This was a bit before my time, and was told by George Franklin Crabtree(Frank), who was one of the unlucky miners the mule fell on ! Later on, the animals were replaced by mine locomotives, called "motors". Shelby ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. My great grandmother,Louisa J. Workman, was again mentioned 10 years later, in the 1860 Boone Co. census. She was age 11, staying withe her grandmother (Jane Moore Workman). Nancy, her mom, was later married to Isaac Workman, and the couple had a dau named Josephine. So about all the accurate info I can find is through Josephine, her half sister.Josephine(b. 1858 ).Josephine is buried at the Hager/Elkins cemetery on Hewitts Creek. She has a grave marker showing her birth & death dates. I know there were many Ferrells on Pond Fork,Boone co.Wv, So it seems likely Nancy was a Ferrell. Great grandmother LouisaJ. is likely buried there too; but the old section has overgrown with vegetation. Louisa J. was married to James H. Elkins, in the year 1887. They had no children. If only Nancy's parents had ben given names, instead of initials, then my search would be over. Shelby ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. I mentioned tragedy in my last post; so now I will blend in some "humor" The loading machine I was operating at Georges Creek Coal Co. was supposed to be "haunted" (#3 loader). A man had prviously been killed when a huge rock fell on him while operating the loader. One evening we had caught up with the loading, and were waiting for a new cut to happen. We were standing around, and all of a sudden the loader started moving a few inches on the track. It stopped, but a young African American named Jabo started running to the outside fast as his legs would carry him.He said he wouldnt work around any "haunted machine". What happened was sometmes electric cross currents will briefly start a motor; then stop. But no convencing Jabo. He was tranferred to another section to avoid his fears of "haunted machines " Shelby ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Stanley is correct about the coal miners caring for each other. When tragedy struck, we miners would not work till the funeral was over. When payday came we would all contribute money to the deceased man's family. We had a burial expense by-law in our Local union treasury, that would pay all the final expenses for the deceased. in addition, the union would contribute a thousand dollar gift to the deceased man's widow.Probably a lot greater nowadays. Shelby, My Grandparents, great grandparents and various other family lived at 27. That is where I spent every summer of my youth. I do believe that it was the best time of my life. I learned more there than I did in school....... Anita </HTML>
