    1. [WVLOGAN] STURGELLS and BELCHERS
    2. Got another question for the list... On Oct. 2, 1884 (according to the Logan County marriages on line) Blackburn Sturgell, II married Eliza Belcher. That I already knew. However it states that Blackburn was divorced. Does anyone know who his first wife was? He also apparently married a third time to Martha Jane Hannah in 1926. Anita </HTML>

    2. Thanks,Sandi; I have two boxes of Goldenseal & Wonerful WV magazines.I remember the Li.ncoln co. story. I already do stories for two other websites (Manila, Logan County West Virginia ). For some reason, story telling comes much easier when the audiences are local people, like the four southern counties. It may be because they are "cousins", I dont know. After six years on the list, I feel a closeness to the list people that just doesnt happen in other sites. Yes, it would be nice if someone told the story about Little Johnny Hager, and Blind Haley to the Goldenseal Magazine. They were wonderful musicians locally raised. 3. Hello all, I am a subscriber to the publications of the Goldenseal and Wonderful West Virginia Magazines....maybe many of you out there are also....It would be great if many of you, who love to tell these wonderful memories, would do so and write them down, and submit them with some COPIES of photos from your youth that would be in relation to your stories, to these magazines....Being that we have all enjoyed your stories, it seems such a shame that you deny the whole of West Virginia in not reading about your youthful experiences and knowledge of the past. The most recent issue of the Goldenseal features a story of Jim Mullins, born in Lincoln Co., WV, a son of John and Martha Mullins. Jim is a brother to Teaberry and Vernon Mullins. This is the same Jim Mullins for whom I wrote about several months ago, that I told the story of my mother and two other young men in their teens, in the late 1940's on a Halloween night, put up a road block and they all got into a fight with some older guys who stopped, and my mother's great uncle John Lucas came to their rescue just about the time one of the older guys was going to punch my mother in the face..... http://www.wvculture.org/goldenseal/ Think about it....Your memories make great reading. And they certainly need more from the Logan Co., WV area..... 2. Laurel, Priscilla Mead married James Elijah "Eli" Sturgell on May 4, 1826, but parents names were not listed. However, for the 1820 census list for Floyd County, KY, these were the heads of household - Moses, Rhodes, Eli (no kidding), Robert, Samuel and William. But check this out...Eli Meade married a woman named Priscilla AKERS! Cuz, Anita </HTML>

    3. Anita, I have a Priscilla Meade married to James Elijah Sturgill, parents of Blackburn. Am I all confused on this?? I gotta remember to write to Anna Lou and see what she has (she and Juanita were talking geneaology this summer, but I was chasing kids and unable to pay full attention, I also found out Romaine did ALOT of work before she died. I need to remember to ask Pnut for it). Laurel [email protected] wrote: Hello Logan County, I have a question for you. 2. I remember too the Christmas of 1934. I was 10 years old. Times were hard, but my dad believed in "practical" gifts, such as clothing, shoes. I remember waking to find under the tree a pair of new boots, with a sidepocket with a small knife . I was delirous with joy ! my mom also filled the sock with taffee candy(homemase) from molasses. Some how she found the money for an orange. I wish today's kids could be so happy; BUT they have never had the experiences of growing up in hardtimes,so what they do get is not so appreciated as some poor kids would enjoy. Merry Christmas to all ! Shelby PS: Stanley, I have a live Holly tree in my yard, with berrys ! It is the Am. kind. Dont buy any English Holly trees, as they dont bear berrys ! ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. 1. [WVLOGAN] Obituaries of Friends & Family.
    2. Jim Burgess
    3. Dear Logan County, Virginia Family & Cousins, I have been finding a lot of obituaries of friends and family recently. Often they have recent pictures with the obituaries. For the most part I have not seen them since we graduated from high school back in 1961. To be honest I would not recognize them if I saw them on the street. I remember them as young beautiful and handsome young people. Obituaries are sad but wonderful documents. Sad that they passed away probably too early, but wonderful when you learn of their accomplishments in life. A quick update on www.virginiasurnames.com <http://www.virginiasurnames.com/> We are averaging 35 hits a day and each visitor is checking out 24 pages of information per visit. Thanks for all the kind support and visits. If you have not visited www.virginiasurnames.com <http://www.virginiasurnames.com/> please stop by. Check out Logan County Recreated - look for Enter the Data Base. I will have some time during the holidays and will get caught up with the posting. Please continue to send in corrections and updates. We need to finish the 1870 Census. I have added the 1870 Tridelphia Township and am working on the 1870 Hardee Township about 40% complete. Someone was working on another Township. Cannot remember who. I will be happy to start working on that township. If others would like to work On other township that would be great. Would the person who is working on the other township let us know how they are doing. Merry Christmas to everyone on the list. This is the time of the year to thing about what our Savior Jesus Christ has done for each of us. Sincerely Jim Burgess

    3. Sometimes our most precious memories are about the simple things. To me, Christmas is about experiences, not stuff. Christmas 1934 was the first Christmas that I can remember. I knew Christmas was special because Mother considered it special. My mother seemed to be an unhappy person by nature. She had very little to be happy about other than her children. As Christmastime approached she became even more melancholy. In retrospect, I can imagine what must have been going through her mind as she tried to think of ways to make us especially happy on Christmas. Pine trees were not common to the area where we lived, but one day as we were walking near our home at the mouth of Turkey Creek, Mother spotted a live holly tree growing on the riverbank nearby. It was about five feet tall, perfectly shaped and loaded with bright red berries. We dug it up, put it in an old water bucket and took it home with us. Mother did not possess any tree ornaments or ribbons, which was just as well because further decoration of the tree would have been redundant. There were no festivities or gift exchanges that Christmas, but everyone loved and admired our tree. We children were happy and Mother was happy. Even without presents under its branches, that little holly tree remains in my memory as the prettiest Christmas tree I have ever seen. It stood in the front room of our house long after Christmas was forgotten. Enjoy the season, but remember the reason, STAN

    2. When World War One happened, in the early part of the 20th century, one of the soldiers who fought in France would become supervisor at the Mud Fork Division of the Island Creek Coal Co. after his return from the army.He named the mines Argonne(#15), Shegon (14),and Verdun (16) for all the towns in France where he had fought.Verdunville was later renamed. Another mine, # 28,at the head of the creek was unnamed. Many of the homes still stand, after nearly a hundred years of age. They were all rehabbed, and updated. The company wouldnt allow for houses to be delapidated; they were kept in neat condition. Too bad the other mining companys didnt do likewise. Some like Ethel & Freeze Fork were the pits ! 2. No text in your message ; about the Mcdowell co mines : I never worked in them. Mine were all in Logan co Wv. My wifes's uncle worked at the old Bradshaw mine. He boarded at nearby War. The town was aptly named; every Sat Night there was war in the town; when the miners got paid they were busy fighting each other, after some drinks in the saloons ! 2. This tale was told by Shelby Dyer to me. The old Crystal Block Coal Co. mine at Sarah Ann,WW never had any paydays. the mine only worked 2 or 3 days a week, so the miners were all "scrip bound", and had to take their pay in food at the company store. Shelby fially got a job at another mine, where he did much better. He laughed and called the Crystal Block mine a "coffee sack mine", where you filled your bag in groceries at the shifts end <grin> Shelby B. ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. 2. We were having lunch in the mine one night. A foreman, who was too ambitious for his own good, kept looking at his watch while parading in the entry. We had watches too, and knew when our thirty minutes were over.He approached us once more, and said: "I wish somebody would invent a pill so people could go on working without eating" . I replied "So do I; then we could all stay home, and not have to put up with some silly foreman". He went on down the entry, mumbling to himself,<grin> Shelby ************************************** Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products.
