This is something all of us 80 + remember well.? I was born in Loagn County.? Grew up in Pike County. Gone at an early age.?? http://kycoal.homestead.com/KYCoalMiningHistory.html The URL above is a classic.?? It is pictures of Kentucky and WV coal miners.? Mostly KY.? The towns are all familiar to most of us.?? My daddy worked for Armour & Company in the coal areas of Kentucky and WV for many years.??He talked ?about many of the mines particular Consolidation Coal Co and Inland Steel.? I have been in most of those Eastern Kentucky Coal camps collecting for Time Finance Company.? I use to go to Wheelwright? on pay day. I would go up to the mine shower house and find the ones I needed to collect from and then to the colored boarding house. ?Wheelwright had two "hollers".? Hall hollow and Branham hollow.? The blacks lived?along one hollow and the whites along the other.? ?I drove the company jeep. I had guns pulled on me on two occasions but was smart enough to smile and walk away with my mouth shut.? I remember my uncle Burley Chapman having big scars on his back from hitting the mine bolts that held up the mine roof.? Look at these when you have some time.? There is a lot of history here and a lot of misery and ?heart break. Charles R. More new features than ever. Shelby, There are some Baptist factions that do not allow the marrying of divorced people unless their divorced spouse has passed away. I think it has to do with their belief that when you are married it is a vow for life. Anita, I'm not sure about WV, but in Virginia 1st cousins can still marry and it's perfectly legal. The only persons you cannot marry are parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles. In my husbands family we had his nephew married his great niece... they are 1/2 first cousins, once removed. Why and why did it become law that you could not marry your cousin? No, I don't have one in mind that I would like to marry (can't imagine that...) but it appears that there several inter marriages in my families so I am just curious as to when that took place and why. Rick, In my McClung line (Greenbrier County) one of the daughters of my fifth great grandfather married her father's brother. That made the brother my 4th great grandfather. Perhaps it wasn't the Sturgells and Belchers that were not so bad after all. Anita be </HTML>

Anita; It IS legal to marry a cousin in WV. I know of two couples who are legally married in Logan Co. WV. So, there never was a law forbidding cousins marrying. One of the marriages was about 15 years ago. The other marriage was back in the 1930s, and they are deceased. Both were out of the Burgess clan, lol Shelby ************************************** See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)

Shelby, Have you ever heard of an author named Silas House? He is from eastern Kentucky and writes fiction. His stories are so much like the stories that I read on this list. And in one of them, he has a great grandmother named Lucinda! These books are my recommended reading if you want to feel like you are back "home" in Logan. Anita </HTML>
Anita; It seems like every generation had at least two Lucinda Baisdens, on my side I agree, that name was overused. And to beat it all, its not a name taken from the bible.I can understand so many names like Mary, Martha,Ruth, & others, as they were religous oriented Cousin Shelby ************************************** See AOL's top rated recipes (http://food.aol.com/top-rated-recipes?NCID=aoltop00030000000004)

Is it me or was the name Lucinda used a lot in these Logan County families? I know that my Sturgells and Belchers wore it out. Anita </HTML>
I think it was to honor Lucinda (Osborn) Baisden. Gail, Not that I know of. Anita </HTML>
You are welcome. I have been unable to find Johnny or his mother, Lucinda in the Ks state census records. I have tried more than once in the 1895 census. I am glad that I did find him in the 1900, that does place him in Ks with family. Btw, he was my 1 cousin, twice removed. I have all the census records for my ggrandparents, George W and Eliza Ann (Baisden) Hager and their kids. Also for Elzabeth Jane (Miller)(Hager) Tyson, (widow of Cpt John Morgan Hager) and her son Aaron. But the 1900 Ks. census was the only one that I found Johnny Hager in. I do remember my Mother telling me that a lot of the Hager ancestors were musicians. Just wish I could remember the complete conversation. Seems like she mentioned one that lived in Ks for a time who became very well known back in Wv. My little brain cells are getting tired and that would have been around 50 years ago. When I was young I was told it was OK for second cousins to marry. I don't know if that was a social or legal thing.
