    1. [WVLINCOL] Robert Gilmore Atkins (R.G) Lincoln County, WV
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Atkins / Adkins Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZCC.2ACE/981 Message Board Post: Robert Gilmore Atkins (R.G) Lincoln County, WV Timber Merchant Mar 1873 - 10 Jun 1945 Married; Delia Ann Adkins 27 Sep 1870 - 7 Oct 1946 Source; http://www.thenamecenter.com/users/james/ged2html/d0000/g0000394.html#I5484 Robert's parents were Calahill Atkins and Angeline Compton. Angeline's parents are thought to be Anthony and Hannah Compton? Calahill A. Atkins is thought to be the son of John & Valey Adkins. According to Shelia S. Hunt in November of 1993 this information was to be printed in a book of an unknown name to this writer? They named one of their children after Angeline. Calahill was married 12-1-1869 in Russell County, Virginia. Marriage register 2 of Russell County, Virginia 1853 - 1870. There is also an Angeline listed on the 1850 census for Russell County, VA numbered entry 1680. Her parents appear to be James and Emaline? Its very hard to read. I was told by my uncle Bill that Robert (R.G.) would visit his son Sid's general store every morning and read his newspaper cover to cover. The only thing Bill ever remembered being told by R.G. was, ''boy, how is school"? Robert died at the breakfast table. A few years later Delia too departed her earthly home for the heavenly abode. I'm happy to report that I'm tall and skinny like my father and R.G. R.G.'s son Sidney Atkins (1896-1968) was a WWI veteran and my grandfather. He never spoke of that war except to pat his head and rub his belly. Knowone ever knew what that meant? Until, just last year did I find out from some English men of the Queen's Royal Service in Tacoma, imagine that, this unusual jesture was performed by US officers and soldiers during WWI. It signified no fear and was performed outside of the foxhole. Later, the royal surname Atkins from the Land of York, Surry County, England would be magnified into a machine gun adequately named, Tommy Atkins. Robert had a brother and son named Tommy. Although I was only 8 years old when my grandfather passed away, I still remember being held in his Godly arms and being blessed sitting in Delia's old rocking chair on his porch. I did not notice the chair during my last visit this past summer, no wait, I believe that I did see it sitting in the upper chicken house. My father Sidney Atkins Jr. resides at the ole farm place to this very day on Little Hart's Creek. It would be hard to miss a 180 degree curve in the Little Hart's Creek road, a little valley and a big farm house. This land came into family pocession due to the Revolutionary War service of Hezekiah Atkins / Adkins, his brother Millington and father Parker. Their names are listed on the memorial at Tue Ende Wei State Park in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Its also within view of the new bridge on Hwy 2 that crosses the Ohio river. Hezekiah, named after the good and 16th. King of Israel (the one Isaiah prayed for at his death bed and for a sign the sun went backwards 10 degrees and he lived an additional 15 years), became a circuit preacher for 57 years. He is buried in the Hezekiah Adkins cemetery located in Wayne, Wayne County, West Virginia. Named after the General with the same surname no doubt, 'Mad' Anthony Wayne was the first general of the US Army. The Hart's Creek farm was settled around 1820 by Delia's great grandparents Elias Adkins and Suzanne Frye. His advocation was farmer and a very good one. BIRTH: 1797, Montgomery County (Giles), Virginia DEATH: 1870, Ferrellsburg, Logan County, West Virginia They were married on Nov. 25, 1819. Children of Elias Adkins and Suzanne Frye. +Allen ADKINS +Arminta ADKINS Aaron ADKINS Enos ADKINS +Louisa ADKINS Mary Jane ADKINS Polly Emmerine ADKINS Kiziah ADKINS Letty Belle ADKINS Hezekiah "Karr" ADKINS Eliza ADKINS Jacob ADKINS Elias, son of Hezekiah, and Suzanne Adkins are the settlers of Ferrellsburg in Lincoln County next to Harts. Their unmarked graves are located next to one another and may be found next to one of their daughters. The Mullins cemetery is located just off the main road of Rt. 10 and directly behind the old post office. Elias's son Allen and his wife Fannie both disappeared in 1859. They were both 39 years of age and left 'Little' Aaron the eldest of 14 years to raise his 6 brothers and sisters. Its assumed that he had some help from Elias and Suzanne, but this must have been very little since most credit has been given to his aunt Arminta. Children of Allen Adkins and Francis 'Fanny' McNeely. +Aaron "Little Aaron" ADKINS Sarah Ann ADKINS +William Tolbert "Bill" ADKINS Nancy Jane ADKINS Hezekiah ADKINS Louisa ADKINS +Mary Margaret ADKINS This kept Aaron (15 Aug 1845 - 1929) out of the Civil War for a few years, but soon his time ran out. 'Little' Aaron was very lucky after the war to be alive at the ripe ole age of 16. He had been wounded 3 times at the battle of Pickett's charge in Gettysburg on the morning of July 4, 1963. He was just one of 96 out of 332 men to do so as exclaimed by Col Vincent A. Witcher of the 34th. VA C.S.A.
