Surnames: Willis/Lipscomb/Logan/Thompson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZCC.2ACE/1166 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on Samuel Willis and his wife Lilly Prudence Lipscomb (she is listed on her marriage license as Prudence Lilly Lipscomb). Samuel and Lilly are my great grandparents. I know they were in the Lincoln and Putnam co's area in 1897. On March 6,1897, a son George was born in a little town called Byrnside and April 16, 1902, a daughter was born in a little town called Burdett. I was told that these two town's were on the county line of Lincoln and Putnam. I need some proof that they were living in this area, I am thinking that they came into that area just before these two children were born. I know they had left Lincoln and Putnam and came into Fayette co by the 1910 census as they were listed in the 1910 census of Fayette Co. I have checked the 1900 census for Putnam Co and couldn't find them, I do not have access to the 1900 Lincoln co census, or the birth records for that area, could someone help me? Thank you very much. Sarah

    1. [WVLINCOL] Death Record Help
    2. Beth Lewis
    3. Hello Lincoln County, I just visited your beautiful county yesterday. And what a beautiful day to travel also. Everyone at the Courthouse and Library were wonderful, and very helpful. I was traveling with some of my relatives and didn't want to keep them standing around too long, so didn't get to see or look for everything I probably needed too. I need some more help though. I actually have a couple of questions. Here is the story and problem: I found a will dated Jan 1912 and looks filed after death May 1912 for Samuel Bowman. I also found land transfers for his two children that were in the area during that time E. M. (Emmitt/Emmeett) BOWMAN and wife E. J. (Eliza Jane) BOWMAN, and daughter Daise/Dasie/Daisey BOWMAN. In his will he mentions his wife and himself about being alive and that they would have the proper burial, he also mentions his other children that are living in Putnam Co WV and some in OH, So in January of 1912 it seems as if both Samuel and Elizabeth BOWMAN are both alive, but then when it is filed as him being deceased in May 1912, Elizabeth or his wife isn't mentioned. Since I have an approximate Death date for Samuel and basically Elizabeth between Jan 1912 and May 1912, Why wasn't I able to find a death record for either of them? And is it possible for someone to double check, that I didn't miss it when I was down there. I did find and Elizabeth BOWMAN who passed in 1917 and was documented by a friend E. M. Bowman (which also happens to be her sons initials), but showed her age as 80 years and a few months. My Elizabeth would have only been about 77 years old in 1917. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Sincerely, Beth Lewis

    1. [WVLINCOL] Bowles; Bryan Families
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Bowles, Bryan Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZCC.2ACE/1165 Message Board Post: Two parter. I am trying to locate some information on the family of August Gay Bowles. He was born in Hamlin in 1877, where his father, Winfield, was a doctor. August married Letha Bryan, from Huntington, a cousin of the Bryant family in Hamlin. They had two children, Benton and Veronica Winona Bowles. August (sometimes known as Guy) became the editor of the newspaper by 1920. By 1930 however, his wife Letha and daughter Winona were living in an apartment in Huntington, son Benton cannot be found (but he had a son, Benton Jr., living with his grandmother Lula Purdy) and Guy appears to be a prisoner in the newly created Federal Prison in Georgia. I figure if something happened to cause this, it must have been pretty big and would probably be known. Anyone have any idea? I would really like to find the family of Guy and Letha. I find no records after the 1930 census placing Letha and Winona in Huntington. I believe Benton Jr. is the same Benton who died in 2000 in Pennsylvania, but the local paper has no record of his death. Any help or pointers appreciated. I am totally intrigued by this story. Letha Bryan was my great grandmother's first cousin and from the last "lost" branch of the family. This branch is also potentially very important, as they took care of the family matiarch until her death in 1891 and may have some of the lost family records. Really, really would like to find them.

Surnames: James William Harless married to Mary Lilly Bridgeman Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZCC.2ACE/1163 Message Board Post: I know that Richlands, VA is close to WV, so I just ordered my father's original SS application and it lists his father as James William Harless as is also my father's name. My father was born in 1905 in Richlands, VA. I have done our family tree, but since I know nothing of the history of my family, I have the wrong father for my father. I always thought it was William B Harless from Bristol, where my family moved to eventually. However, it is not. My grandfather, James W Harless should have been born between 1860 and 1885 to be a reasonable age at making babies. However, he could have been born earlier. Men used to make babies until they were in their seventies. I saw your Thomas Harless and wondered if you have the other children names in his family. This would have been about the right timing. Any help you can provide would be great.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZCC.2ACE/1160.1.1 Message Board Post: I know that my ancestors were there in the 1910 Census of Duval District, so records should still be available. I haven't been able to locate this family in the 1920 census, but have found the son living next door to them in the 1910 census, living in Fairfield CountyOh in the 1930 Census. Not sure where he might have been for the 1920 Census. Since my ancestors were 74 and 72 respectively, I am simply guessing and hopeful, they may have passed away before the 1920 census in Lincln County and the son moved. Although I haven't found him until the 1930 census. Still just a guessing game at this point. I will spend the day in the Lincoln County area and if no luck, I will try the archives at a later date. Thanks for your input and help. Sincerely, Beth Lewis

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZCC.2ACE/1160.1 Message Board Post: Although I am from NJ, I have been to Lincoln County to research many times. The county clerk's office has death, birth and marriage records for Lincoln County. HOwever, records before 1909 were lost in a fire of that year. The library is located only about a block from the courthouse and has a very nice genealogy room. It seems they have been concentrating on cemetery listings, which could be very helpful to you. The library also has Lincoln County newspapers on microfilm. I believe they go back to 1909, but issues are missing in the early years. The Lincoln County GENWEB site has an inventory of cemeteries which might help you. It is very important for you to know as closely as you can where your family lived. You may want to check deeds at the courthouse to pinpoint their location. Some deeds prior to 1909 were re-recorded at the courthouse after the fire.
