I go to the Queen's Ridge Cemetery quite often and also have a listing of everyone buried there. If you still need assistance, e-mail back to me at dlilly529@adelphia.net. I'm 5th/6th-generator descendent from Absolam Queen who was one of the two settlers who set aside land for the Cemetery and he is buried there. della

Mullins were my husband's Great Grandparents. Their names are listed in The "Hatfield Family History", by Harry Sellards. Their Son Vincent "Doc" Mullins married Levicey Hatfield, Daughter of James A. Hatfield of Mingo Co., WV. Both Vincent and Levicey died when they were in their twenties in Wharencliffe, WV. It's so sad to hear that the 1890 census was destroyed. I feel strongly that the James P. and Elizabeth or( Louisa) at Hart Creek. are our family.

I did a search of the Lincoln County Census and came up empty handed using all variations of spelling I could think of. I did a statewide search for Vincent Mullins and came up with one, he was living in the Cabin Creek District of Kanawha County. His parents are listed as Preston Mullins age abt. 56 b. KY, father and mother born in TN. Wife was Eliz. age 46, daughter Cindesta age 18, son Amos age 15, Emma age 12, and Vincent age 6 born in August 1892. I found a James P. Mullins in the Scott District of Boone County, with a wife named Eliz. but neither they are younger than yours, and have no son named Vincent. If this is them, the older daughter was likely married by this time.

Mullins in the Isleham Files-Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encyclopedia 1884. It reads...James P.Mullins came to Lincoln County in 1877, and now owns about 250 acres of the farming land on Hart Creek. Good improvements on the farm and a large orchard. Mr Mullins was born in Kentucky in 1848 and is the son of James P. and Dorcas ( Mullins) Mullins, residents of Boone County, WV. Elizabeth J. the daughter of Isham and Dicy (Johnson) Collins, was born in Kentucky, Oct. 5, 1855, and in Buchanan Co., Virginia, May 25 1872 became the wife of James P. Mullins. Five children are the result of their union. Mary J., born oct. 5, 1875,Victoria, April 23, 1876, Albert, July 18, 1877, Minnie B., July 01, 1879, James A.,Nov. 13, 1883. Mr. Mullins is a man of good business qualifications and prosperously engaged in merchandicing, with business headquarters on Hart Creek one and one half miles from it's mouth. He may be addressed at Hart, Lincoln County, West Virginia. There would be at least one more child listed on the 1890 and 1900 census. His name was Vincent "Doc" Mullins. He was born in 1885.

I certainly have no heartburn the way the society operates. My dealings with Elwanda Smith, Lula Yeager and Cheryl McCallister have been very positive and these ladies have helped me quite abit. I live in Georgia but make the trek to the Hamlin Library about every two years and I am amazed at Elwanda's and Cheryl's thoughtfulness and eagerness to help. I don't understand how the Society can afford to publish the quarterly newsletter and mail it to the subscribers for the paltry sum of $10 annual dues. Thanks ladies for your dedication and administration of the Lincoln County Genealogical Society. Terry Petrie Warner Robins, Ga.

I thought the purpose of the message boards was to inquire about genealogy issues, not to post and malign the character of someone who may have a valid reason for not responding to e-mails, phone calls etc. Things happen in peoples lives that tend to interfere in research such as illness, death in family etc. I have found nearly all websites have a "last updated" notation on them. I always take this into consideration when I e-mail for information. I also call libraries in advance to double check that they have the books/reference material I am seeking as things happen in libraries as well. I consider it extremely rude to post a "no thanks" to anyone for any reason whatsoever on these message boards. All of us have been frustrated and disapointed at times when we do not find what we are looking for. I have traveled to OH and WV from Texas and never found the information I wa! nted, but didn't feel the need to get vicious about it. I suggest you get over it. I have found everyone to be most helpful when they are available. Oh, and another thing, although I do live in Texas now, I am a native of Lincoln County and.........you WILL catch more bees with honey! P.S. No response needed......

If a site tells me there is going to be all these books down there and I am under the impression the site is maintained, I'm driving down there to look at those books, only to find out the whole thing is a crock. What's been done is done, but from this point forward if you want to continue as a "society", something needs to be done in an effort to continue. Maybe invoking officers from out of state rather than the few people down there that don't care? There are enough people on this message board who could do a better job. Now we can all go round and round about "attracting more bees with honey" phrases, but all I'm ! speaking is the truth. And to whoever this Lynette person is, I am MORE than willing to help anyone with any information I have( and I have been helping ever since I signed up for this)..sounds to me like someone is just bitter and wanted to say something imortant. Patty, now that you're the new president, don't be too proud to say you need some help and state what that help is. Linda

It has been my experience that many people researching their ancestors expect and demand that others do their work for them. But as I see it, it is our obligation to do for ourselves and, if we should be lucky enough to come in contact with others researching the same families, we can only hope that they would be willing to share their information. Many genealogical societies are fortunate to have unlimited funds and resources thus enabling them to build a formidable library of reference, but those are generally in urban areas. Lincoln County is certainly not is such a class. We have neither the funds nor the technology to research, post and disburse all that we would wish. As far as getting no immediate gratification for postings on this message board, a seasoned researcher knows that often it can take weeks, ! months or years to get answers. This is not a business. We are but a handful of locals with no money, few computers and very little help trying to scrape up what we can for a lot of people who expect to get something for nothing. I say "something for nothing" because rarely do these inquiring people ever reciprocate with any information of their own. It would be wonderful if we could have a full time, fully functioning and funded organization with all of the equipment and technology it would take to run smoothly and efficiently. Until that time, those of you with a heart and a bit of understanding, perhaps will cut us some slack and remember what your grandmother always told you, "You get more with honey than with vinegar".

The Lincoln County Genealogical Society has a publication for sale of a listing for the Curry Funeral Home. The Curry Funeral Home serves the Alum Creek/Griffithsville area of Lincoln County. Knootz Funeral Home in Hamlin has been around for many years, but do not make their records available to the public. Knootz Funeral Home is the oldest funeral home in the county, having formerly been known as the Johnson Funeral Home, and then the Johnson-Knootz Funeral Home. Handley Funeral Home in Hamlin is fairly new to the area, I do not know their policy on records. McGhee-Handley Funeral Home is located in West Hamlin, I do not know their policy on records, but this funeral home did take over the McGhee Funeral Home that has been around for quite a while.

First, the Lincoln Genealogical Society is NOT a part of the Hamlin Library. The Lincoln Genealogical Society's resources are located at the library and are available for use anytime the library is open. Second, there will never be anyone there to assist you with your research, as the Lincoln Genealogical Society, nor the Hamlin Library has the manpower to be able do that. The librarians there do the best they can. Lincoln County is now, just as it has always been, a very poor county, with very little operating funds for anything. Third, Elwanda Smith is no longer the president of the Lincoln Genealogical Society, I am, and have been since the February 2005 meeting. If you saw her address posted on the Lincoln Genealogical Society website, that address may not be a good one. That website hasn't been updated since September 2003, and does not belong to the Society, but was set up by a member of the Society who has had som! e personal problems and not been able to attend meetings and etc. as in the past. The Lincoln Genealogical Society operates on a shoestring. Most meetings will usually find 3 of 4 officers and perhaps 2 other members in attendance. It's hard to be a productive society when others care so little. Our goal is to try and preserve as much Lincoln County history as possible. It's almost impossible without the help and support of caring people. Patty Butcher Tyler President, Lincoln Genealogical Society
I'm trying to locate the father of Romie H. Plumley (Dec. 20, 1902 - Jan. 1983). Romie was most likely born in Lincoln Co., a son of Jeanette Edwards. He died in Boone Co. Jeanette was still single living with her parents in the 1900 Lincoln census. So, assuming they married, Jeanette and Mr. Plumley would have married after the 1900 census was taken and he died(?) before 1904 - 1907 time frame. By 1910, Jeanette was married to Jerome Adkins and Romie is listed as 7 years old. In 1920, census shows Jerome, Jeanette and Romie Plumley, now age 17. Both census they are still in Lincoln County. Jeanette died in 1921. I'm hoping someone living in the area, who may frequent the genealogy library, could check for an obit on Romie Plumley looking for his father's name. Romie was married to Elsie Holley and one of their children was Ivan Keyster Plumley. They are all buried in the Porter cemetery, Myra, along with Jeanette E. (Edwards) Adkins. Thanks Lora
I'm trying to identify the parents of Romie H. Plumley (1902-1983). Romie had married Elsie M. Holley and they had a son named Ivan K. Plumley. All three are buried in the Porter cemetery, Myra, WV. I think Romie's mother may have been Jeanette or "Nettie" E. Edwards. She was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Edwards. According to the 1920 census, Nettie had been married to Jerome Adkins for 3 years. She had 2 children and one was living. The child, Roma Plumley, age 17, was listed as step son to Jerome. Jeanette E. Adkins, 1884-1921 is buried near Romie Plumley in the Porter cemetery as well. According to the death certificate, Jeanette Adkins is indeed Jeanette Edwards. Who was Jeanette's first husband, Mr. Plumley? Thanks, Lora
