Franklin Johnson (1801 - 1893), lived on Mud River, near Hamlin. He married a woman named Ida. I'm having difficulty with Ida's maiden name. According to the VA Marriage records, Franklin Johnson married Ida Holley on July 3, 1834 in Cabell County. Franklin and Ida have at least 10 children: Squire, Charles, Benjamin, James Avis, Sarah, Martha, Crosby, Matilda, Elisha, and Enoch. According to the death certificates for Benjamin, Sarah and Enoch, their mother was Ida McClung. According to the certificate for James Avis, his mother was Ida Holley, which matches the name on the marriage certificate. So I'm trying to figure out it the mother should be listed as Ida Holley or Ida McClung. I've thought perhaps there were two wives, both named Ida and about the same age but there is still the problem that James listed his mother as Ida Holley, yet his older brother and younger sister listed her as Ida McClung. Any help on this would be appreciated. Lora
Hello, Is there anyone on this list who has done research about Allen HOLTON and Virginia Jane Smith and their 10 or so children? I am trying to find out who these children were and who they married and could use some help from someone who maybe has already done a little work on this family. Thanks Pat
I would not swear to it, but she may have been a Wiley. There was a Miranda Wiley that married a Smith, but I don't know if it's the same. Let me know if you find her. I have a good amount of information on the Armstrongs, if you are interested. Just tell me who you need help with and I will see what I have. John (and Simmie's) wife Laura/Laurette was my great grandmother's first cousin. My mom remembers that Simmie hand dug a well on her family's old home place at McCorkle. Simmie married John's widow within a few years of John's death. Since she was left with young children, it was probably a good thing he did. Lora

If you get on to Corridor G in Kanawha County and head towards Lincoln County(you will pass a Wal-Mart Super Center) you should come to Ivy Branch. It is near McCorkle. You can get onto Corridor G off of Rt.64(in Charleston), I believe.

McComas Cematery Dairy Road is the road that follows the Guyandote River between Salt Rock and West Hamlin. If you were in Salt Rock on Rt. 10 turn right onto the road just before the bridge that crosses the Guyandotte River and railroad tracks. This will take you past the Salt Rock School. You will need to make a left turn onto Dairy Road about 1 1/2 miles out this road (If you continued straight ahead you'd be on Madison Creek Road). This road comes out at West Hamlin, at the end of the bridge crossing the Guyandotte River on Rt. 10. The cemetery you are looking for may be the one I have heard is located back on a hill across from where the old McComas Dairy was located. I have never been to this cemetery and don't know what the name of it is. There is also a possibility it may be the one I was told about that was destroyed by a farmer who bought the property (this happened years ago) and removed all the headstones from their location, dumping them into a pile somewhere because he was afraid his cattle would fall over the headstones. This was told to me by a man who lives across the river from where the farm is, as he saw this being done and inquired why. Sad to say, but this is how some of our ancestors burial sites have been treated. Patty Tyler President Lincoln County Genealogical Society
