I'm researching the life of Amanda (CAMDEN) McKINLEY (1846-1905) and am looking for information about her grandfather Henry Camden. I've looked for references to him or to the Carper Church in Francis Asbury's journal without success. http://www.archive.org/details/journalrevfranc03asbugoog I notice that there is a Camden United Methodist Church in Weston, WV. Is this a successor to a church at which he preached? Can anyone point me to sources of information about the life and ministry of Henry Camden? Searching for information on my Great Grandfather. His name is Elza/Elsa Watton or Watson. Born in 1868. My Grandmother Augusta was born in Bridgeport. His wife's name was Alice. I found them in a 1900 census for Georges Twp, Fayette County, PA. In 1920, I think I've found him on Harvey Street, Greensburg, PA But in 1930 there is an Elza Watton listed as an "inmate" of the Weston State Hospital, Lewis County, WV. Any information greatly appreciated. Diane Schoff
Repurposed asylums name called offensive Owners say title was once used by former mental hospital Vicki Smith Associated Press Mar. 23, 2008 12:00 AM WESTON, W.Va. - It's an intriguing and provocative name that translates to Web hits, phone calls and tour tickets: the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. To some, the title acknowledges history by re-adopting one of the many names previously held by the long-vacant, 19th century mental institution known most recently as Weston Hospital. But others say the new owners of the massive Gothic Revival hospital have gone too far, disparaging the suffering of former patients and reopening wounds with planned events like "Psyco Path" dirt-bike races on the grounds. "It's like turning back the clock to a time we don't want to go back to," said Ann McDaniel, executive director of the Statewide Independent Living Council, one of several mental-health advocacy groups to object. "I think they could still do what they want to do without being offensive." Scott Miller, director of Mountain State Direct Action Center, said one former patient burst into tears after seeing the name on a sign. "It's not just that I'm a liberal and I think it's not a good idea; it's seeing people physically hurt," he said. "That's about all I needed to know." Rebecca Jordan, whose family owns the 307-acre complex, sees things differently. "This part of history is vital, and you cannot bury what you don't like," she said. "Should we take down the Holocaust museum? Should we completely deny all that happened because it's not favorable? Because it might hurt a few feelings?" The daily tours that began last week focus on issues such as the evolution of mental-health care, the Civil War, the Great Depression, even architecture. "Not one person who has gone through this place and taken the tour has said that one thing was offensive," Jordan said. "It's not a freak show." The hospital is one of the world's largest hand-cut sandstone structures, a National Historic Landmark that once housed more than 2,000 patients but has stood largely silent since 1994. After struggling to find a suitable, sustainable use, the state sold it at auction last summer for $1.5 million to Jordan's father, Joe. The Jordans plan events on the grounds year-round: "mud bog" races, in which trucks try to speed through a pit without getting stuck; a reunion of former employees; "Hospital of Horrors" haunting tours in October; and a "Nightmare Before Christmas" tour on Dec. 23. But their approach to marketing "cheapens and denigrates the whole field of psychology," argued Jerry Kirkpatrick, an international business and marketing professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. "They are sending mixed signals about the nature of the product they are selling. Are they selling history? Or dirt-bike races and Halloween nights?" he said. "Sooner or later, one of these themes will have to move to the forefront and the other will fall to the side." Kirkpatrick said serious treatment of the institution might mean putting recreational opportunities into a separate business and preserving the hospital as "a proper memorial." "I can't imagine a long life for the present operation," he added, "unless they have a lot of money to throw at it." It appears the Jordans don't. With renovations projected to cost tens of millions of dollars, "it's going to be 50 years before we see revenue on this property," Rebecca Jordan said. --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Need some real help here: Audrey Gray Walton married Vess Trader, probably about 1947, probably in the Braxton Co., Harrison Co. area. Then she married Willie Engleman next; probably after 1950; of course her name would have been Audrey Gray Trader at this time. Not sure where she lived at this time, probably WV, could have been Ohio. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Lyle Corder **************It's Tax Time! Please let me apologize for the lengthy message. I am in need of help with my "BRICKWALL" and hope that one or more of you will be able to assist me in my search. It is quite an interesting story. I have been able to locate several source documents but have not yet been able to complete the puzzle. I am searching for any information on these to individuals and any family that may be tied to them. The two married in Taylor County, West Virginia on November 13, 1912. I suspect that Ada is the daughter of a William Curtis and may have a brother by the name of Thomas Curtis but nothing proven as of yet. I have no idea who the parents of Pat Curtis are. The two had 6 children that I know of and it is my understanding that each of these children were "contracted" out to other families as Pat was busy in the mines and Ada spent quite a bit of time in Weston State Hospital in Lewis County where she eventually died in 10/1954 after spending 30 years there. My biological grandmother was one of their children. She was named Ada Bessie Curtis. She was contracted out to Forest and Cora (Wilson) Fisher who were married in Taylor County February 17, 1904. My grandmother was born September 8, 1923 in Grafton, Taylor County West Virginia. Grew up in Nitro, WV and knew herself to be named Ada Mae Fisher. She married James Gilbert Bays in Charleston, WV 4/23/1942 and on June 4, 1943 had a son, Kenneth Allen Bays. James and Ada divorced in 11/1948. According to her brother, Orbert Charles Curtiss, Ada finds the contract in an old trunk and discovers that the Fisher's are not her biological parents. Eventually in the mid 1950's Ada comes to live with Forest and Cora Fisher in Parkersburg, WV where her brother Obert lives and where her father, Forest Fisher dies in 1955 and the following year she gives birth to my father out of wedlock on 3/25/1956 at Camden Clark Hospital. Attorney George Shedan handled the adoption and my grandparents, Harry and Edna McPherson take my dad home from the hospital. Dad found out after his parents death that he was adopted and the search began. I have the adoption order and Dad's father is unknown. His mother and Kenneth lived in Belpre for a time taking care of Cora until Cora was placed in a home in Canton. I next find Ada and Kenneth in Florida, first in Miami and later in Orlando. She remarries for a short time to a Bert Nelson but that lasts only a few years. Ada dies 8/4/1996 in Orlando Florida known before we can locate her. She kept her name Ada Bays as this was listed on the adoption order and on her death certificate. As of this date have been unable to contact Kenneth although we believe he still lives in Orlando. Looking for any information. Specifically the following: 1) Place and Date of Death of Charles Patrick Curtis ( have his WWI draft card says he was born in Barbour County (although have found other sources listing him born in Lewis County and even Ireland) - he may have died in Maryland or Pennsylvania - believe he died after the 1950's) 2) Parents of Charles Patrick Curtis and Ada Bessie Weaver 3) There may be additional children - several different names of mothers on birth/death certificates of their children 4) Any information on my grandmother Ada Bays and Kenneth Bays 5) Anyone who knew any of my family who may have leads. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post. Tracy Adams mtadams14@verizon.net

I am helping a friend in research of her GG-Grandmother. She was Annie Hughes, born June 1, 1883 in Camden...at least as far as what the Social Security Administration has on record. Her parents were identified as Joseph Hughes and Mary E. Lee. I find them in the 1880 census living in Waggoner, Mason County, West Virginia. He is 26, Mary is 22. They had children: Andrew S.E. age 2 Joseph W. 9/12. The West Virginia Marriage Records has a Joseph R. Hughs marriage to Mary E. Lee on 8 November 1876 in Mason County, West Virginia. We are looking for a connection to this family to an Annie Hughes. Her Social Security Administration documents indicate her parents were Joseph Hughes and Mary E. Lee. Annie was born circa June (possible August), 1883, (possibly in Camden, WV). The 1900 census for Mason County has Anna Hughes, born August 1883, living with a Nancy Lee. There is a Phelix Hughes also in the household, born Oct 1881. They are listed as Grand Daughter and Grand Son of Nancy. They are living with Phelix Lee, probably the son of Nancy. The 1880 census shows Nancy and her son "Felix" in Robinson, Mason County, So the Felix born in Oct 1881 could be a brother or family member to Anna. Anna Hughes married David Hudson on November 26, 1903 in Mason County. What happened to Joseph Hughes and Mary E. Lee. IF Annie was born to them in Camden, Lewis County, she returned to Mason County to the Lee Family. I can not find Joseph, Mary, or their children as identified in the 1880 census. Any help would be appreciated.
