Ten years after his marriage to Mary he was hanged for her murder, convicted of her drowning in Coal River. He was a former Baptist preacher and he had fallen in love with another woman. He planned to marry her after Mary was dead. The morning of the execution he rode in a wagon to the gallows, seated on his own coffin. The crowd of 5,000 [?] sang two hymns, he sang with them and then blamed his predicament on whisky, saying he could not recall many of his sins because he was so drunk when he committed them. He kissed his daughter and asked Sheriff Slack to trigger the gallows.
