Here is another site that is excellent for finding places: http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form This site is particularly good because, as we know, many of the coal towns in West Virginia either have changed their names or no longer exist. The U.S. Geological Survey site includes not only currently existing towns, but historical ones and variant names. For example, the town of Stuart in Fayette Co. is now called Lochgelly. The Rootsweb site gives me no hits for Stuart, WV; however, the USGS site does, giving me its current name, and I can access a map to pinpoint its location. On the downside, the USGS recently made changes to their site and it seems to run slow ever since. Hopefully, they will get the bugs worked out soon.
