Dear List Members, I am in a quandary and need your advice. I have posted this information on a WV site and a Hackney site (where it has been met with good advice and support) but I felt I needed to touch base with other Hackney's, as she has a long line of descendants. This message is to Nancy's descendents, whom I know many reside in Kanawha Co.... Nancy HACKNEY Goff Ashby is my g-g-g-grandmother. She is the daughter of John and Nancy ANDERSON Hackney. She first married a James Goff (my direct line) and second, a Thomas Ashby. Nancy and Thomas are buried in a very remote cemetery in Roane Co. WV. Nancy died in 1894, Thomas in 1925. Nancy's headstone is made of a limestone/sandstone material and is in very bad condition. Thomas who died much later and was a Civil War vet, has a different type of headstone which is in good shape. I would like to personally, at my expense, replace Nancy's headstone. But here is where the problem lies... #1. Do I need permission from anyone, except the owners of the land that the cemetery is on? #2. Are there any Hackney's that would disapprove? It saddens me to see her grave in such disrepair and even more so to think that in a few more years, it will be lost forever.... Any and all input is greatly appreciated! Thank you, Brenda Jo
