The 156-page soft-cover volume includes a brief description of each of the state’s 755 buildings, structures, historic districts, objects and archeological sites listed in the National Register from 1966 through December 1999. Photographs accompany many of the listings, which are organized by county. In addition to the National Register listings, the book features an appendix with suggested publications and Internet websites related to archaeology, architecture and the National Register. “Historic West Virginia” was funded in part by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, and by West Virginia Celebration 2000. The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. Authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect the country’s archaeological resources. Properties listed in the Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects that are significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture. The National Register is administered by the National Park Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
