I received numerous inquiries about the obituaries at the Kanawha Public Library and how to access them. You need to request them in writing. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Kanawha County Public Library Attn: Reference / WV Librarian 123 Capital Street Charleston, WV 25301 Their phone number is: (304) 343-4646. Their website is: http://kanawha.lib.wv.us/chas.html Their reference librarian's email address is: <[email protected]> Make checks payable to Kanawha County Public Library or KCPL. Do not request obituaries via email. They don't have the staff for that. They can only handle 5 requests or less per written letter. They do not charge research fees, but they do charge copy fees. They charge $.25 (25 cents) per copy. They will not research an obituary for you. They will ONLY look up and copy an obituary if you have an exact death date. They only have the Charleston Gazette from 1924 to date and the Charleston Daily Mail from 1914 to date. If you need other cities and years, they recommend checking with the WV Archives. On a little different note, they will do look ups for you in city directories via email. At least, she did for me. I just emailed her a name and approximate year of residence and she checked through several city directories for me. The one's that I know of are for Charleston and the years of 1898, 1899, 1903, 1906, 1907 and 1925. They probably have more, but these are the only years that fit the time criteria I was looking for. Now, if you want a copy of a page in any of the city directories, you'll have to do the same thing as mentioned above for the obituaries.
