Hi, Cara: "I had a little bird, Its name was Enza. I opened up the window And in flew Enza." (influenza) A children's rhyme that developed around the 1917-1918 influenza epidemic, just as "Ring Around the Rosey" originated with The Black Death. Funny how children can make disaster a part of every day play. Many people today don't realize the enormity of the influenza epidemic of 1918. Between 500,000-675,000 people died in the United States, and 20-40 million died worldwide. The theory is that it was so horrible, no one wanted to talk about it or remember, and so, less than 100 years later, very few people outside historians, epidemiologists, genealogists and the like know it occurred. I have a great-grandmother who is said to have died about this time and can only wonder if the flu claimed her. Like so many who died in the flu epidemic, her death was not recorded nor could her daughter (my grandmother) show me where she is buried. It is even possible that, being divorced, she remarried and started fresh, with her "death" being a convenient excuse for severing ties with her children by her first marriage who were already being raised by relatives.
